Oroville Operations and Main Spillway Update


. . .Since Oroville’s main spillway gates closed last week, a team of DWR engineers have been performing a thorough inspection of the main spillway to evaluate its performance – all the scaffolding and activity you are witnessing is related to those efforts. Engineers will continue to be visible on the main spillway performing these inspections.

If we get a warm, wet Pacific storm that snow will melt quickly and it will be panic all over again just like in 1997.

Lake level rose 40 feet in 4 days in 2017. When that snow starts melting, they won't be able to release fast enough

I recall a story about the director of Titanic. When he was a kid he built a hot air balloon from dry cleaner bags, and literally all his neighbor kids stood around and watched him fly a mouse in it, and land the mouse alive and unharmed. I read that. Makes ya think doesn't it?

The average balloon costs for a small 2 person is about $22,000. For balloons to carry pilot plus 4 passages the average cost is 35,000 to over $45,000. This price includes the envelope, gondola, fuel tanks, and instruments, but does not include any ground support equipment or chase vehicle.

That's not much fuel. And frankly, with todays small oxy tanks I bet (fire considerations aside) you could have an hmm, 1lb of fuel to say 100lbs of lift ratio. Again, it's simple, watch the wind, blast the thing full when the wind's right, then float to the buttes or to GCC and then hit the release valves and drop into their parking lotor the buttes.

In either case, GCC has loose slots and fairly decent stars, it's a good crowd. The Buttes, well they'd be mad, but possibly your swagger would make them smile. anyway if you land it right they have to climb to get to you.
