Paul Preston alleges that DWR has quietly contracted with a new, unnamed engineering firm to work on Oroville Dam following “government inspectors” (FERC or CA state, Paul?) checking the spillway April 19. If true—wow. DWR has no money; this must be bad.

Any noticeable amount of water out of their control can easily grow and destroy the dam.

Wait until it goes above 880 (at current fill rates that should be overnight Friday night) and then we will see if they open the spillway again.

The incoming water (snow melt) has been fairly steady in exceeding outgoing water at around 8000 cf/s for a couple of weeks now. As the lower elevations that snow melt off should start to slow down as less and less ground has snow cover left on it, though the deeper snow at the higher elevations will continue to melt for some time.

Any rain event would increase the inflow into the lake quite dramatically ... but that part of California is now entering into it's dry season so they may luck out and not have any more rain events for the remainder of the spring.

One can hope that NO rain events occur as the lake goes into it's maximum pool stage ... and the spillway does NOT get tested again this season since it apparently has problems of some sort.

Yeah, that might be true if snow were normal but they 163 percent of what they usually get for the year and it's bigger than the snowpack was in 2017.

If there was a big enough quake that could shake region up. I wonder if there could be any kind of liquefaction take place in the dam seeing in how it's landfill but also definitely getting seepage in it? I know part of it is concrete but it's still earthen dam.

If they can't anymore than they are right it's going to overflow in 2 to 3 weeks with just the snowmelt.

If they get lucky and have no more rain events, it would likely be October before they got more rain.

It is true that they typically let the lake fill up this time of year, it's a storage of water that gets sent to SoCal. The lake drains down over the summer to prepare for the next season.

I saw video of friends who went to Tahoe last weekend and was surprised to see that the snow was basically gone on their drive. This was in South Lake in the city, but still. (yes I know there is still a snow pack to melt) If they can balance the outflow enough to match the inflow they could dodge the bullet.

THEN THEY NEED TO GET THAT DAMN SPILLWAY FIXED!

If the dam has that much seepage then it's going to fail at some point in the future, anyway. You just can fix the spillway...you need a whole new dam.

If there aren't any big problems they would have left the spillway on higher flow than right now. It tells you there very big problems with the dam period.

The wild card in the deck even if it survives the melt and drains lower is still can it survive a strong to major earthquake without failing?

They did a fix on the spillway but it's still not in good working order...it is the whole dam itself. How long would it take to build a new dam to replace it...years and money they don't apparently have anymore.

I think there are some out there in these big financial banks who need something like this to occur so it can take the blame for the coming collapse. If Oroville fails it is huge not only in the loss of life and homes but also for the price of food on the shelves in the grocery store not only in USA but for the world. You wonder how people in USA could starve to death just look at all the flooding in the Midwest this year plus if this happens about 50 percent of the food supply is gone for USA. Of course there is also the problem with the drinking water and getting water period for the whole state afterward.

It can go over the emergency spillway only for so long because it will erode the dam too much. at some point they are going to have try their luck with the regular spillway.

EXCELLENT POST!

Yes, "They" need this dam to collapse in order to blame the coming economic collapse on.

We're talking about some really snakey phukkers.

Notre Dame was a distraction...Oroville is the coming attraction.

I've heard recently the use of the spillway has caused some 20,000 earthquakes over some time. However, the area is not prone to "natural" earthquakes like the SF Bay Area is or LA. Seems the further inland you go, the less the quakes are an issue.

Sacramento is my home town and it is not prone to earthquakes either. Oroville is close enough to Sac that we would have heard news reports of any significant quake, let alone having felt it too. We felt a small tremor when the big quake in 89 shook the Bay Area, but it wasn't enough that everyone even felt it.

So that's the "natural". If they want it down, which it appears they could, all bets are off. They just burnt the shit out of neighboring Paradise in November. The whole town was lost. But not the forest. Hmm...

And you're right, the devastation would be cataclysmic. There are LOTS of people below the dam in a lot of cities. There would be devastation all the way to the Bay. Lots of orchard and farm land. The whole levy system in the Sac area is fragile.

And don't forget the water stored in Oroville is ear marked to go south and also waters the whole lower central valley, which is mostly all farm land, and it would not make it south. It would instead all go to the Pacific at once.

No new news in that they plastered the hill with concrete and built a secant wall down the slope that would supposedly protect from erosion cutting back to the lake. But Scott Cahill says it will erode back to the lake and they cannot use it.
