The ONLY way blasting should be allowed anywhere near the dam is for a wide gas pressure relief trench to be excavated between the location of the explosion and the dam. Without it, things get broken or things move. I speak from experience. When additional lanes of I-270 were built in the neighborhood of Dougherty Ferry Rod in St. Louis, MO the contractor set off a shot that moved a bridge 9 inches away from the blast, which was over 200' away and across the exit ramp. It finally took $250,000 and 4 Dwiwidag rock anchors installed to literally screw the bridge back onto place. I pity the man who thinks that the only way to solve a problem is with the application of high explosives. Engineers remedy things, and build things. They leave the explosives alone."
