The Hyatt plant was not designed to control the lake level. The ms was designed for that purpose. Might be a good time to use it with maybe more snow melt cause of the wind and a current buffer maybe only 10 percent of the buffer that was insufficient just two years ago. But not using the ms. Nope, it appears workmen are on it.

And if Hyatt goes offline....maybe yes....and inflows grow to 20k cfs....maybe yes....then the poultry 6 foot buffer could go in a day.

Just two years ago the lake gained 50 feet in three days. Thank the lord that the weather is so stable across the country that crop plantings have not been so low at this date for a century or more.

As I recall from 2017, outside power is required for the Hyatt Power PLant.

I believe that is why the shoo fly overhead power poles were installed when the original towers were removed.
 Quoting: Crunch62

IIRC, it's the other way around.

The turbines have to push an electrical load to pass water. Or else something breaks or fries up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77013656

Don't the turbines need an external excitation current to produce output? Sorry, thinking of automotive alternators here. Surely, the turbines aren't simple dynamos with giant static magnets.
 Quoting: Crunch62

Yes, turbines need rotor excitation.
I'm a retired Turbine mechanic. The power input to the rotor is significant I might add.
I suspect they may be able to use power from one turbine output to energize the next, cascading down the line.
"Perhaps"

Workmen.....for reasons unknown....on the main spillway (ms) just today. Do not get me started about the gates. The ms is, again for reasons we know not, not going to be used any time soon, outflows through the Hyatt maybe going down, and inflows maybe going up. Another Sunday just tomorrow.

Not sure what the hydro units might require....

250MW steam generators are like 22KV on the field or output windings. Don't recall what the rotors are rated.

Not sure of the type of generators hyatt uses, but I do know they upgraded the turbines not too too long ago, see if I can find the article I read a while back that talked about it. New stainless, modern material more efficient models the DWR was talking up.

Far as I know, hyatt must be connected to the "Grid" to operate at all. I assume the overall power generation at least must have some load anyway, assuming a grid tie is the easiest fastest way to do it. I know in 2017 when the distribution lines went down, they couldn't operate until temp lines were linked up.

Found article, talks up the new turbines, new runners too. oooh, they're austenitic AND nitronic, if they would have Titanium nitrited some stuff? it might have caused a cool metal term overload!

A view of the Lake Oroville main spillway in Butte County, California. The spillway gates are designed with seals to minimize leakage around the edges of the gate. This modest leakage is beneficial with respect to reducing friction when the gates are operated.

The bridge over the gate works is about to fall apart.....

Cheapest solution for now....

and just after all that new guard rail work "to open the dam to the public"

Sure would like to see that 12' crack over gate 8.....

And the 'spalling' across the horizontal joint at pier 10
(where that crack is)

This tells me they were FOR SURE lying about the MS being "just fine." If they'd had to run it hard I think they know it would have blown the lower part up again, just as before. Now that the melt is over, they are going to proceed with unannounced repairs, as though it were the plan all along..

Great pics. Amanda. What's with all the razor wire being put up along the DAM road. was there a heavy chain link fence along that road prior to this newly constructed one? Is it to keep random people from leaving the road and wandering down to the spillway perimeter?
