Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
I saw a still photo from a video this morning showing what they claimed was a huge leaking jet (stream) of water emerging from the far left side of the underside of the bridge from the left side of the gatehouse bastion (looking uphill.)

HAS ANYONE ELSE SEEN THIS??

They also showed the same place/photo back in May, and the jet was obviously a lot less intense back then.

The remote viewer thing is freaking me out a touch. This is what she described after the water found it's way through the weir and then later it broke in half??

Snakes are back on the MS, diverting the "GOOD" leaking water to the right side, looking downhill.

Hope its the angle or the curve of lens. Gate house has serious issues, but I don't expect them to cause uniform tilting of the whole thing. More likely that subsidence/voids and forces of operation/water cause the cracking and differential settlement actually seen there.

Little crack is no big deal imho. A small item for the maintenance list. I'm happy to see what I think is a piezometer. If the Johnny Appleseed of piezometers is hanging around the dam, hopefully he will replace the 53 of 56 original piezometers that quit working many years ago.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Any thoughts as to why:

1. The orange cones are blocking off the whole downhill-side lane on the bridge now.

2. There are always puddles of substantial size on the bridge up against the walkway that now no longer even dry up completely in the hot day-time sun.

3. they drilled two massive holes to the left of the bridge only to cover them up with what looks like sheets of plywood.

Also, has anyone heard there is a large horizontally-shooting leak high above the spillway and just under the top of the bridge near that end where they drilled those so-far-unused holes?

Probably just as I have suggested twice......

The red painted 12'+ crack is worsening....

AND that end of the bridge sits on a ledge 10' across.
I think it was said it is about 10 inches wide

BUT...5" of that has "spalled" or cracked up and broken away.

That area, the east end of the bridge over the gates is labeled "Pier 10"

I believe it is getting worse.....MUCH worse.

This is why they ALL OF A SUDDEN....

Decided to build the "NEW" bridge across the end of the spillway.

Again "Sure would like to see that red painted 12' crack AND the ledge condition today"....

BEFORE it breaks apart and takes out the ENTIRE gate structure!

How many hundreds of tons of concrete and heavy equipment has traveled across that damaged area in the last 2 years?

ok, I'm asking.

Isn't the road/headwork's bridge vital to construction vehicle's access?

Cause that road is really deteriorating under that netting area.

Remember all that rock they trucked in? That poor bridge really took a pounding, and it was marginal when that inspection was made over 2 years ago.

That weir is long like a pencil. Unlike the gate 8 crack this crack looks like it goes all the way across.

I would not be surprised if the weir bursts open right there, today.

But I'm no professional concerning dams. Just concerned for my fellow countrymen.
 Quoting: Nonentity

the crack is at the top....you think it goes down to the water level? Where are we now, 7 or 8 feet below the top?

I guess if it split, it would go all the way and open up a water channel...
 Quoting: Prayandprepare000

If it opens up, the scenario of ES failure applies.

640k CFS flow until 25 percent of lake drains out. But it could V notch further down.

The crack is on both sides of the sensor mount.

Is part of weir shifting from water leaks? Not sure.

Let's ask this.... Do we believe the stress that made that crack is gone? I don't, so I would expect it to grow and considering it's the ES weir, not good imho.

I don't like having to hunt for it. LOL.

Anyway, wind downstream of the Oroville dam didn't really materialize today. The Sand fire in my county is like 2,200 acres. You would think it'd be much more, but so be it.

Very hot and dry conditions all over the valley now, we'll see what happens tomorrow.

By the way I checked my karma and you people here are so nice giving me greens. I was surprised and am thankful for the many kind words. I am up to 20 so I could pin this twice but I am leaning until waiting to see if we get a more dire or drastic event.

I know the Cahills are working on another video, and so far they haven't expressed evacuation urgency but if that changes I would pin this. Or if it got that bad maybe we should start an emergency thread and I could pin that. Whatever. At any rate I do have the option of two pins.

This dam creeps me out. What is even worse is knowing how typical it is of our old infrastructure. Train tunnels going into NYC are ready to cave in. Dams everywhere are in bad shape. Nuclear power plants are past their lifespan. Bridges are often barely passing inspections. Oroville is just one of so many disasters waiting to happen.

Susan Wolding has put out some good info, no doubt. But she's becoming the Juan Brown of those concerned with the dam. While Juan is all kumbaya, Susan is chicken little.

There is a very good chance the dam will be here next spring, and she's still telling people to run.

While she may be right, people would do well to leave, in my opinion she's hurting the cause at this point.

She will be screaming to run next year, and if there are more years, every year the dam still stands. All the while losing credibility for the cause, not just herself.

Just my two.

I have to say it's not a question of if but when these disasters happen. They very well could all happen at or close to the same time as each other. It may not be this year. It may not be next year or even the year after. But I gotta say within the next 10 years 20 years at the very most I think we will see these dams, nuclear power plants, and bridges fail.

I agree

To add, the ES is designed as a slow fail of the dam. Instead of the earthen dam being topped. Which is a faster, more catastrophic failure.

The only time that should be used is if the main dam is going to be topped and then V notched rapidly.

It's just a lesser evil of the two.

When I saw the ES get RCC like it has, I thought WTF!

The remote viewer thing is freaking me out a touch. This is what she described after the water found it's way through the weir and then later it broke in half??

Amanda,

The RV saw a section of the ES weir break, push forward, and then tumble down the hill.

Considering that she said that the problem started where the ES joins the MS gateworks abutment, that would fit perfectly with breaks at both:

1) The piezoelectric sensor location (mid ES, somewhere near the middle of the new concrete apron)

AND

2) The connection of the ES to the MS gateworks abutment.
