Without control of the gates and no ability to release in volume....

This thing is a disaster waiting to happen.

With ongoing leaks it could fail at any time, at any level.

Re: California's Lake Oroville Main Spillway Severely Damaged/Eroded. Oroville Dam's Recently Reconstructed Main Spillway Fundamentally Flawed
Just saying hi. Not really logged in but this is paradise gypsy here. Went thru Oroville about a week and a half ago. Thought about going up to walk across the dam since it was a Sunday evening. Realized I was absolutely terrified to do so and right there is my opinion about the dam. Hi to all and hope you are well. I pop thru often on here.

So Crunch....you said you lived on the edge of the innundation zone. Was that for a full lake? Now that it is down 50 feet, are you above the disaster zone?
 Quoting: Prayandprepare000

The inundation maps are based on a full 900'elevation, fair weather and complete catastrophic dam failure. Instant release of the total reservoir storage (like the St. Francis Dam disaster).

Lower reservoir elevation coupled with a gradual release like a slowly failing spillway would reduce the inundation area, as the water would have more time to move downstream instead of spreading out.

The only scenario that concerns me would be a wet season catastrophic failure at full elevation.

The river would already be high, creaks and streams overflowing and the ground already saturated. That would increase the inundation area significantly.

More wonky numbers from DWR. It looks like we gained another turbine discharge for a few hours, but...?

Hum. I don't know what to say. The thing is, if they don't dismantle the dam before winter and you get pummelled with rain, and they are afraid to open the gates but the HPP can't keep up with inflow, then you might get that catastrophic failure at full elevation. I don't know what to do but pray for everybody, and I know a drought isn't good for CA but maybe for this dam it would be a mercy.

The Emergency Spillway is intended to prevent the dam from overtopping and thus preventing a catastrophic failure of the dam. However, there are issues with the dam itself and the main spillway that could cause such a failure. Settlement, seepage, etc.

The drought-flood cycle in California is hard on earthen dams. Years of drought and low water levels allow fill materials to shrink and crack. Then a flood season and high inflow puts tremendous pressure on the dry, shrunken structure.

Proper flood storage procedures by DWR could reduce these impacts, but they have proven to be incapable of proper reservoir management in the past.

It is interesting to note that evacuations were ordered in 1997 because there were concerns the ES MIGHT be overtopped due to high inflow. Thankfully, no overtopping occurred, but Oroville, Marysville and Yuba City were evacuated for days.

In 2017, officials KNEW the ES was going to be overtopped, but evacuations were not issued until AFTER the ES overtopped and the erosion (that a child could have predicted) was occurring.

Why the disparity?

I have absolutely no trust in CA DWR. I have earned that right.

the catastrophic failure will likely be in the seam between the dam and the abutment that has the spillways on it... But it could blow on that abutment too.. or flat in the middle of the dam itself.

In other news, the reservoir elevation is down to about 828 feet. Still churning out through the Hyatt Power Plant.

A far cry from what DWR Spokesperson Erin Mellon stated back in April (?) about keeping the lake at full 900' elevation all summer.

I'm still trying to find a link to that statement. It seems they all disappeared.

Crunch- Mellon's lie was in various places on the internet; we all remember. I remember the posts also about the dam guidelines, keeping it at 850 to be safe.

What creeps me out the most is the total disappearance of weiryone on twitter with all of his fabulous pictures. He must have been severely threatened.

It is highly possible the southern SA is going to move big time.

a few days ago now.. there was a shit.. words tonight.. but a 7 hours recording.. of a type I used to watched years ago.. a tremor type recording.. on Cajon pass. This is ominous. This type of "tremor" at this level precedes major quakes in a couple weeks or so..

Last time.. was 2 weeks before those last quakes that are still rattling near Ridgecrest I think it is... and that one before Ridgecrest was not as heavy as the one a few days ago on Cajon Pass.

I was going to include Mellon's statements in a reply to DWR's email, but but they seem to have been scrubbed. I can't find her comments anywhere.

re: weiryone. I imagine photos of the dam could be considered by TPTB to be a national security issue.

A cease and desist order under the threat of domestic terrorism charges would be enough to make anyone drop out of sight. Just a theory.

The local forecast is showing a chance of rain next week.

Here we go, into the wet season.

DWR hasn't got it below Oroville reservoir spillway gate elevation yet, I hope they are puckering.

Bastards.
