Does superman have a foreign policy?
Superman has evolved from a comic book character to an internationally-recognized cultural figure, and is widely considered to be the archetypical super-hero. His approach to super-heroics is often set as the benchmark against which other fictional heroes are compared. As is the case in many superhero narratives, the theme of the relationship between power and responsibility is central to Superman’s ongoing story. Since he is a being of nearly limitless power, the character must face questions about how far he should take his “never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way.”

The Superman mythos engages with one particular aspect of the power-responsibility problematic: its the global-scale element.

While virtually all superheroes face this problematic in its general form, the relative magnitude of Superman’s power sets him apart. While most superheroes are limited by the logistics of their circumstances and powers to operations within a localized domain (Batman in Gotham city).

Superman’s powers give him the ability to easily topple dictators, destroy missiles or clear mine fields. With abilities far beyond those of normal beings, he is powerful enough to rival entire armies. When it comes to suffering occurring beyond borders, therefore, he must therefore develop something akin to his own foreign policy, deciding whether he should be activist, interventionist, isolationist, or somewhere in between.

He must decide how much national boundaries matter to him when people are suffering within them. When violent or reckless regimes spurn his help, he must weigh whether to violate the principle of sovereignty. He must choose whether or not to respect the requests and commands of elected and unelected heads of state who do not have the ability to control him by force.

The fact is great power doesn't require great responsibility ethically or morally if you are superman. (or his hotter cousin Supergirl)

Here's another question for the philosophers and political students.

Should Superman have a foreign policy?

Just as 'real' as 'God' and 'Jesus' which are described as 'supermen' in those ridiculous books you all fawn over.

Of course he's fake, but we're discussing the arch-type, not the gullibility of people. Most organized religious crap is a credit and a testament to how stupid people are. I doubt anyone here would ever say they met 'superman' without having eyebrows raised in disbelief that a comic book character is 'true'.

Re: Does superman have a foreign policy?
Agreed the DC universe blows chunks, but the Marvel universe is always reflected, cheaply at time, of the DC universe offers. In the Marvel universe there is the Sentinel, who is given the exact same abilities of the DC universe Superman.

For spiderman, in the past couple of years there have also been about fifty spiderman reboots. However when Spiderman is bound to the symbiote, his power increases massively while his sense of self control diminishes. He might as well be 'superman' since he is removed from the needs of social structure given the power he has with the symbiote augmenting his already considerable strengths and abilities.

Re: Does superman have a foreign policy?
Not anyone's place to hold the scale in a democracy that is not someone else's country. Nor is attempting to shape the determination of a people of another country. You are all adults, and there is no one around to wipe your ass. You all run the wire without a net or common sense.

The assumption that the scales of justice are given, it is not.

It is right defined by the society you live in. By the courts, the governments, the legal system, you seek justice those are the venues you have at your disposal. The law is defined by men and women like yourselves and you won the right to govern yourselves many years ago. If the complexity of the situation is too much, then figure out what to shut down and get rid of. It plainly obvious that no one understands how any of it works and it's breaking.

Yet no one wants to let go of anything, they want the big easy and they'd also like it all free of charge. Given that offer...yeah. There is just no fixing that type of stupid. Much easier to avoid it.

I suggest figuring out where you need people educated and start cracking a book. The rest of those reactors are going to start going off like a string of firecrackers pretty soon.

Superman's birthing matrix was part of his rocket ship that landed in America. As soon as he landed he was "born" in America.

He's more American than your average Joe.

Exactly, the question is raised. Should a 'Singularity' get involved. The answer would be no.
