Trust me, go... a few years back I met a couple in Belize that drove down from California... best experience of their lives... also on the same trip we met a family in Guatemala from California that took busses down with their four kids every Christmas (two were still in diapers). On the outskirts of cities, there are motels with garages. We call them sexy motels, because that is where people hook up and they drive into the garage and stay in the motel, no one see's the car with the door shut. Cheap and secure.

I did it 25 years ago and it was a real dismal shithole back then.

My husband was born in mexico. Now a proud US citizen voted Trump. His family that live in mexico are afraid all the time.

Mexico city is a real fear. Went there 7 years ago and i cannot tell you how many times we were scared.

Scared of the military police with semi autos on their backs.

People are really hard up down there. I would go with a friend if you can.

Mexico is much worse than 7 years ago. We avoid it right now even with family there. Too much cartel violence and poverty causing crime.

He just told me a old story about a military cop with a gun on his back stopping my mex husband and mex friend. Husband showed his US ID as well as greencard (before he was citizen) and the cop straight up asked for money to let them go. Was going to imprison them somehow if they didnt have money.

I know its tempting. I ask to go all the time. But they are in bad shape right now.

Small villages that are nice for tourists is a good bet but mexico city is super sketchy.

Maybe you can fly into somewhere touristy and then take a bus to another town

I was just in Mexico on Christmas day and night. Drove too San Felipe to find out my room had no head, 40 F. that on the oceanfront hotel. Turned around and headed back to Scottsdale Az. In San Luis Mex. border crossing. It was night and half the street lights were out, people Jaywalking everywhere. Mexican cop started scream at me to pull over as it was confusing just what the Fuck was going on. The cop knew, demanded my drivers licence, then demanded $100 US as a fine to get my driver licence back. Knowing I couldn't get back across with it being a big ass hassle. Plus he could have just locked my ass up, Mexican Extortion.

Not worth the risk - if you truly love life and don't want to cause your family back home a lot of heartache when you turn up missing, in jail for nothing, or dead months later.

Everyone is corrupt - everyone. The Federalies will "kidnap" you and hold you until someone, anyone gives them money to release you. The "regular" cops will pull you over, and "hold" you for a while in the back of a car on any given street, for any amount of time that they desire until they either get the amount of money they want, and if not pop you into a jail cell that has more flies on the walls than people in TJ.

Seems everyone is related in some way or another. Yes, they call each other in various parts of town letting others know where you are headed. And if you go down there with a "fairly nice" car, you are just a shining light right on you like moths to the flame they will come and take it from you.

I've been down there in many areas for ages. I know people that actually do business down there - the minute they cross the border into Mexico they have the satellite phone ready and never drive at night.

Any chance you can cross the boarder with a dog?
I'm not sure what the rules are but if you are able, always travel with a big ass loyal dog.

I have never traveled to Mexico so I can't speak for it specifically but here's my two cents on traveling:

When I travel to larger cities both domestic and abroad, I always dress way down. Dress in older clothing that fits in with the locals. Appear as if you would be a complete waste of time to rob.

Also always keep your head up. Make direct eye contact with everyone. Acknowledge everyone who makes eye contact with you with a simple and confident nod.

Carry yourself as if you are confident, aware and own your space.

I am female. I live and work in a downtown area with many unsavory types roaming about. I routinely go in and out of both my home and work place at all hours of the night and I have yet to have anyone give me any problems. Hopefully my luck holds out :p

But in all seriousness, I believe a lot of it is confidence and awareness of your surroundings.

Most people, even those with ill intent, are lazy and not looking for a struggle. If they don't see you as an easy target they usually move on and if they believe you might be a very difficult target, they will most certainly look for easier prey.

Corrupt law enforcement, however, may be a different set of rules and I have not had to deal with that situation specifically, perhaps someone else could chime in? I would be interested to hear advice on evading trouble with compromised officials. It is certainly an entirely different set of tactics.

I did it (drove thru Mexico) in the late 90s and never, ever, ever will go there again. Not even to a resort.

I've traveled in Mexico a bit. I've seen 4 cars pass 10 on a two lane road (highway) in the daytime. Nights are crazier. Seriously... don't drive at night. Many trucks will turn on their left blinker to signal you to pass them but they do miscalculate sometimes. "Topes" is Spanish for speed mountain, on the actual highway. If you go for this, there is a good chance that something scary will happen during your trip. Above all else, keep you cool.

I had something similar happen with a parking ticket. Had to may $20, then got confronted by an angry gang of shop owners mad at me for paying him. I had to get my license back to catch a charter flight the next morning and he was going to keep it until the court date.

Don't tell yourself it's not dangerous because it is. All this was many years ago when it was safer.

I wouldn't even consider going alone. I prefer to fly in and stay at a nice resort. I rarely venture out over 1.5 hours from the resort.

The cops are turning crooked in texas.out of like ten trials ive had,9 times,cops lied.they eventually get fired but the thousands they steal for the state doesnt look good for texas.
And it hurts like hell on my income.
