Expect to be robbed by the police. Lots.

I did it (drove thru Mexico) in the late 90s and never, ever, ever will go there again. Not even to a resort.

Don't eat unpeelable fruits or vegetables except in nice resorts. They are usually washed in that same water you shouldn't drink. Don't open your mouth in the shower and brush your teeth with bottled water. Nice resorts will often filter all the water which is why I prefer them.

I've been to Cuba, Cambodia, Turkey, etc...but there's this stigma that traveling in Mexico is dangerous.

I plan on driving during the day and staying in places like Monterey, Veracruz, Tampico, Mexico City, Lago de Chapala, Pacific coast.

I'll be driving a fairly nice Toyota Tundra. Should I be concerned?

Why is Mexico off limits? Any Mexicans have any tips? I speak a little Spanish and love Hispanic culture. Should I not venture south of the border?

My friend did two years in the peace corp down there. When I went there for his wedding I could see why he stayed 2 years. It was beautiful.

Some of our friends opted to travel through Mexico and Mexico City on their way to the wedding. The local advice was to have a travel partner. At least two people.

I want to do that sometime too. Mexico City and now Chihuahua to hunt for crystals.
You cannot destroy my vision when you see my vision undestroyed because I am just an undestroyer.

I know a Colombian who will not even drive through Mexico. They will steal your car and possessions as soon as you go to sleep in your hotel. Even if you catch them in the act, their cousin cop will suddenly show up and they will tell him that it is their car and that they are just taking it back. This is exactly what happened to the Colombian who speaks fluent Spanish and is pure hispanic.

That is if you dont get kidnapped or simply shot for what is in your wallet. It you are white, you are a target and your only hope is to drive a beat up piece or crap that they dont want and look dirt poor. It is actually a stupid idea to go there outside of a resort.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3000152

And of course you cannot have a gun in Mexico. You should make copies of your D.L. and passport for your family and an extra copy to keep on your person and leave your family a DNA samp[le.

A buddy of mine did that a couple years ago and his trailer was smashed open in a hotel parking lot. About $50,000 dollars worth of dive gear was stolen by the dark-skinned biped mongrels.

Your mistake is thinking they are human.

We went in January.

Our guide told us the problems dont start until you get to the northern states of the country.

I would be on the look out for street vendors trying to rip you off more than anything else. The 4 hour drive from D.F to Acapulco was beautiful and worth the trip.

All in all, shitheads there give off the same vibes, avoid overly friendly "strangers" and you should be fine.

A friend did the drive twice, he told me you have to bribe police so have spare change, stay off certain roads, do not I repeat do not drive at night.

I had to bribe the police in Mexico at night.
Later that night I came screeching into a security checkpoint that I didn't realize was there. Everyone came running with machine guns and not one of them spoke English. I just said my hotel was up in the next town in English and named the town and they let me continue on soon after.

Honestly, and from experience, you would have a much better time and less hassle/risk if you took the bus. They are first class and very comfortable. They also go absolutely anywhere you would care to go. Make friends along the way. Cheap. No police to bribe. With a car, you're a target. Fly into Veracruz or Oaxaca with a backpack and head to the bus station. Can't go wrong.

I went to rocky point with some friends back in the 90's and got caught smuggling a quarter ounce of ganja by the federalies.

I thought ahead and had a $50 dollar bill rolled up tight. I whipped that shit out and forced it on him and kept moving like a boss. He never missed a beat and my buddies and I had a nice bake every day while partying and banging young American chicks.

There are corrupt check points throughout Mexico where the police there will look to $hake you down, be prepared. Of all the destinations you mentioned I'd be extra careful in Mexico city as it is a dangerous place for a gringo.
