Unarmed Airman shot by police at traffic accident-- Ruled a justified shooting
Police the police.. If it were anyone else they would be arrested and charged with multiple felonies.

Because it was a police officer, it was justified. Police should be held to a higher standard than civilians yet.. Here we have an officer shooting an unarmed airman for no reason and he gets exonerated.

My comment on their page:

I don't know what kind of police or court systems you have there in Alabama.. I thought police were held to a higher standard than the people they are supposed to protect. If someone were to engage in such activity WITHOUT a badge, they'd be locked up indefinitely with multiple felony charges.

Nope. Not with your department. Call the police for a minor traffic accident, get shot for NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE!!

I'd have to go with the officer on this one.

Luckily the guy didn't die. But bringing his hands together holding a dark object like that was just plain stupid.

The guy was exiting his car at an angle. The police officer was responding to a minor traffic accident. Do we want to hire individuals who actively seek out confrontation and violence at minor traffic stops?

Then the cop lets the guy writhe on the ground without rendering aid for over 5 minutes.

Bullshit.

He struggled to get out of the car in a way that wasn't threatening. The cop just wanted to murder someone that night, pure and simple.

Veterans won't forget what this cop did to one of our own.

Excuse me?

He was holding his wallet with two hands in such a way it looked like he was lining up and pointing a handgun.

People should use a little common sense and not act erratically in a threatening manner in situations like that.

And have a little empathy for the policeman. If the guy did have two hands on a handgun and was in that position there was little time to react.

Minor traffic accident? Guy was reported driving erratically and then hit another vehicle. The driver then gets out of the vehicle and does what is described above.

Sorry, but the fault here does not lie with the officer.

It's really good though that a video captured this so the officer was exonerated.

And I'm not saying that there are not occasions where officers are clearly in the wrong or unjustly heavy handed. I do indeed thing there is a huge problem in our country with this issue. This incident is not one of them though.

As a child I had this image of the local police officers as being these valiant defenders of peace and willing to "take a bullet" for me.

This mindset was not isolated. Our perceptions of police have changed over the years. The police's perception of how to perform their job has also changed over the years. No longer are police willing to "put their life on the line." It has become "my life is more important than everyone around."

I don't want police to get shot and injured. Even less do I want police shooting unarmed and innocent citizens. If given a choice between an unarmed and innocent citizen being shot, or a police officer, it really should be the police officer. THEY signed up for the job. THEY know the risk. THEY are the ones supposedly sworn to "protect and defend."

The officer should have waited another moment. He shouldn't have arrived at the scene with offensive posturing. It was a freaking accident scene. How many accidents do these officers investigate on a daily basis? Is firearm violence against police officers at routine traffic stops statistically a problem?

Highly doubt it.

Sorry but YOU are out of your mind if you can't see what the officer saw.

Doesn't matter what the INTENTIONS of the driver were. He brought his hands together holding a dark object, in the dark, at night, pointed at the officer.

Minor traffic stop? If the guy was driving erratically enough to have people call in to 911 or whatever and then the guy hit a vehicle (did you notice the other vehicles stopped?) it wasn't really a "minor" traffic stop. Then the guy get's out of the car and does what I've described above.

Put yourself in the officers position and remember this took place in 3 seconds. If the guy DID HAVE A GUN was the officer supposed to wait until he fired?

Right at 26/27. Watch it a couple times.

Officer showed great restraint in not hitting him a few more times after that as the guy brought his hands together at 30.

COps muder citizens with impunity on a regular basis.

The only hope is for citizens to MANDATE that local city and county elected officials slash the budgets of LE depts and agencies that refuse to implement significant change in
their justified use of force policy along with also reform
in the legal justice system that strips immunity from cops
who murder citizens while on duty and under questionable circumstances.

Gun maven. Military history buff.

If I had been the officer I really think I would have hit him again at 30. Hard to say as you're watching a video and maybe the officer had identified the object by then.

Personally I would not want to be a police officer where you had to make split second decisions like this in the first place.

And like I said before, luckily the guy didn't die for acting like a moron.
