Spent some time in Central and South America as a post-college, long-term tourist. I love their name for otters...Perro de Agua.

"Water Dogs", which perfectly suits their personalities. Very smart, want to play, will bite when required, and so curious. They live side-by-side with enormous crocodiles, which would routinely try to climb into the motorized dugouts for humans. For them, though, meh, they just kept casual tabs on their locations. They seemed to count the local predators and know where all of them were at any time.

Never saw one eaten, or even remotely distressed.

I know I told this story on this site before, but my first trip up the big river was in a dugout, and the only miens of defense against very fast crocs was a pile of stones at the back. They were definitely big enough to jump in and do some serious damage, if not capsize the whole thing. The guests' job was to hit the crocs in the head with the rocks when they got too close.

It did not kill them. It barely slowed them down. But it kept you ahead of them by just enough.
