ALSO!! Mysterious isolated object investigated by astronomers. March 2017!! An international team of astronomers led by Philippe Delorme of the Grenoble Alpes University in France has recently investigated a mysterious object designated CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9 (CFBDSIR 2149-0403 for short) in order to reveal its true nature. The object is assumed to be a young isolated planetary-mass object or a high-metallicity low-mass brown dwarf. The results of new observations published Mar. 2 in a paper on arXiv.org could help distinguish between these two classes. CFBDSIR 2149-0403 was detected in 2012 by Delorme and his team as a possible member of the AB Doradus moving group. After its discovery, it was classified by the researchers as a unique T-type isolated planetary-mass candidate. However, due to the lack of convincing evidence supporting the hypothesis that CFBDSIR 2149-0403 formed as a planet and was subsequently ejected, the scientific community does not exclude the possibility that it could be a low-mass brown dwarf. Following this discovery, the scientists decided to classify this intriguing object as a unique isolated planetary-mass candidate. However, a lack of additional convincing evidence supporting this hypothesis suggests there could also be another possible theory – that CFBDSIR 2149-0403 is a low-mass brown dwarf. Brown dwarfs are failed stars about the size of Jupiter, with a much larger mass, but not large enough to become stars. They are composed mainly of hydrogen gas but have no internal energy source and emit little light. Although they are hard to spot and identify, astronomers suspect that the universe is full of brown dwarfs. Analysing the object In a research paper published on arXiv.org, Delorme and his team carried out a range of analyses to try and settle the free-floating planet vs. brown dwarf debate. The scientists conducted a multi-wavelength, multi-instrument observational characterisation of the candidate free-floating planet CFBDSIR~J214947.2-040308.9 in order to constrain the its physical properties. What they knew already was that this is the closest such object to the Solar System and it does not orbit a star and thus does not shine by reflected light. With all the disinfo over the years since the first rumblings about "planet-X" started...I had always assumed that the "brown dwarf" reference for this solar system "intruder" was just a made up term. It is interesting to know that "brown dwarf"--and especially a brown dwarf 90Xs the size of frigging JUPITER is actually an accepted term by astronomers. 100LY away is not a threat, of course, but the info about the term "brown dwarf" for me, at least, settles the question about the existence of these things. I am much more concerned about something like the G2 Cloud and Galactic Super Waves being a potential threat than a brown dwarf showing up on our doorstep. But...that's just me! (Check out Paul LaViolette's book: "Earth Under Fire" if you really want something to worry about!) Thanks for the info! Cheers! Brown dwarfs are huge celestial objects that lie somewhere in between active stars and planets. They're called failed stars because they don't have enough mass to sustain the nuclear fusion reaction that converts hydrogen to helium, which enables stars to 'shine' and release energy. In this case, the object is called SDSS J0104+1535, and is located some 750 light-years away in the Pisces constellation. But while this brown dwarf failed to become a star, it's a record-breaker in other ways, consisting of more than 99.99 percent hydrogen and helium. According to a team led by the Institute of Astrophysics in the Canary Islands, that acute hydrogen and helium purity – and lack of metal elements among its gases – makes SDSS J0104+1535 approximately 250 times purer than our Sun, and scientists have never identified such an extreme case before. "We really didn't expect to see brown dwarfs that are this pure," says astrophysicist ZengHua Zhang. [link to www.sciencealert.com] Have no fear, Spock is here!!! LLAP |

Brown dwarfs are intermediate between planets and fully-fledged stars. Their mass is too small for full nuclear fusion of hydrogen to helium (with a consequent release of energy) to take place, but they are usually significantly more massive than planets. The object, known as SDSS J0104+1535, is located 750 light years away in the constellation of Pisces, SDSS J0104+1535 is made of gas that is around 250 times purer than the Sun, so consists of more than 99.99 per cent hydrogen and helium. Estimated to have formed about 10 billion years ago, measurements also suggest it has a mass equivalent to 90 times that of Jupiter, making it the most massive brown dwarf found to date. It was previously not known if brown dwarfs could form from such primordial gas, and the discovery points the way to a larger undiscovered population of extremely pure brown dwarfs from our Galaxy’s ancient past.
