Graphene sieve turns seawater into drinking water
Graphene-oxide membranes developed at the National Graphene Institute have already demonstrated the potential of filtering out small nanoparticles, organic molecules, and even large salts. Until now, however, they couldn’t be used for sieving common salts used in desalination technologies, which require even smaller sieves. Previous research at The University of Manchester found that if immersed in water, graphene-oxide membranes become slightly swollen and smaller salts flow through the membrane along with water, but larger ions or molecules are blocked.

The Manchester-based group have now further developed these graphene membranes and found a strategy to avoid the swelling of the membrane when exposed to water. The pore size in the membrane can be precisely controlled which can sieve common salts out of salty water and make it safe to drink.

Realisation of scalable membranes with uniform pore size down to atomic scale is a significant step forward and will open new possibilities for improving the efficiency of desalination technology.

As the effects of climate change continue to reduce modern city’s water supplies, wealthy modern countries are also investing in desalination technologies. Following the severe floods in California major wealthy cities are also looking increasingly to alternative water solutions..

No it's not you idiot. Yes graphene filters existed but they couldn't turn seawater into drinking water before - if your tiny brain was capable of reading the above you'd see that.

Yep. We're getting there. We're slowly getting over the notorious "death valley" (=turning lab prototypes into large scale commercial units) with nanotech. Not just this one but a plethora of other applications as well.

However, a word of warning. I'll predict that nanotech will be the asbestos of 21st century. There's a breakthrough, nanotech and nanoparticles are everywhere, and suddenly we realize that people get some nasty side-effects from it.

Nanotoxicology is lagging way behind the tech. Underfunded, understaffed and the potential dangers are largely ignored by the business looking for profit.

I don't think its boring-- I didn't know about it. It would be very valuable for anyone who wants to farm in a desert that is near the ocean. In fact it would be almost priceless-- so stop discouraging the dissemination of information wit "downer" comments.

Very good point. We should indeed use a massive amount of energy and money to do something that we could do mechanically without a cost.

Very good point.

Right... and where did you get yours? And what did you object to in particular?

Do you have any idea how bizarre effects nanoparticles have, especially when they enter living cells? An inert material like gold becomes highly reactive (can be used in heterogeneous catalysis) and toxic to cells when the particles are below a certain particle size threshold. Other materials in nanoscale exhibit toxicity in some discrete size regimes but not in some others (larger or smaller). Nanoparticles can go through your skin like that. Or you breathe them in and your body can't expel them.

But please, have a go and try to debunk me in my own field of research.

Boiling water requires large amounts of energy to be spent and fuel to be transfered.

Running water through a straw does not.
