PHILADELPHIA (CNN)–More store closings are coming to a mall near you.

Payless ShoeSource filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday.

It’s the latest blow to brick-and-mortar retailers, which are struggling to survive in the age of Amazon. Online shopping has caused a decline in foot traffic at America’s malls, once a mainstay for companies like Payless.

“This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” Payless CEO W. Paul Jones said in a statement.

I think they're more a victim of Walmart. I think Payless only sold cheap Chinese made shoes so people just started getting cheaper Chinese made shoes at Walmart when they get everything else.
I'm sure Payless didn't complain when they helped shut down a lot of mom and pop shoe stores so I guess if you live by the sword you die by the sword.

Their shoes always sucked. I bought a pair in the early 90's and they badly irritated my achilles tendon till I could hardly walk. I had a coupon and recently got my 19 year old a pair of tennies there and the soles are literally peeling away, layer by layer. Insane.
