When was jesus born?

according to Matthew 2:1

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

jesus was born during the days of king Herod.
king herod died in 4 bc ( [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] this means jesus was born in 4 bc MAXIMUM.


if we are told herod sought to kill all the babies who were 2 years old and younger, this means jesus could have been born in 6 - 5 bc as well, but! 4 bc is the absolute MAXIMUM



now Luke tells us in Luke 2:1-6

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

according to Luke, Mary was pregnant when Cyrenious was governor of syria.

Cyrenious was made governor of syria in 6 AD.

this means jesus was born in 6 AD MINIMUM.


so we have a problem.

Matthew says 4-6BC MAXIMUM
Luke says 6AD MINIMUM
