Happy Cinco de Mayo, Gringo
Cinco de Mayo

Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which occurs on September 16.

Cinco de Mayo; Spanish for "Fifth of May") is a celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a significance beyond that in Mexico. In the U.S. the date has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture. In Mexico, the commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores that initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain

Happy Cinco de Mayo to you, too!

I spent a two days and a night in Puebla. SOOOOO much more interesting than Mexico City. I kind of coveted having Maximillian's chess set. Sorry!

Brought back beautiful majolica and old bull fighting tickets from one of the best street flea markets I have ever been to. Fun place.

I'd bet lots of Mexicans, as well as Americans, don't know the info. you just posted. If so, maybe "Gringo" in you title was a little limiting??

Federal drug agents arrested an Aspen man at the Hunter Creek Apartments last week as part of an effort to take down a major Mexican drug trafficking operation, according to sources and court documents.

Oscar Mora-Campos, 43, was one of two Aspen residents and one New Castle resident arrested April 20 for allegedly being part of a multi-million-dollar operation that transported large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine from Mexico to Colorado via California, according to federal court documents and a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver.

Those three men plus 14 others were indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver after a one-year investigation that found the drugs were distributed out of the El Rancho Market in Aurora, according to the documents. The leader of the operation in Aurora allegedly made more than $3 million in deposits between 2013 and 2016, while another man allegedly made more than $600,000 in cash deposits during the same period, the documents state.

The leader of the trafficking operation, Jose Tapia-Rubio, 58, allegedly owned the El Rancho Market in Aurora. Confidential informants allegedly bought $1,000 ounces of cocaine and $500 ounces of methamphetamine at both the market and Tapia-Rubio's home, according to the statement.

Re: Happy Cinco de Mayo, Gringo
The 45-count indictment exposes the inner workings of a Mexican drug gang that was based at a market in Aurora and distributed drugs - mostly cocaine and methamphetamine - throughout the region and then cash back to Mexico.

The indictment says that the drugs were brought from Mexico through California and into Aurora where they were brought to one of three stash houses in town. From there, the drugs would end up at the El Rancho Market at 15401 East Mississippi and then be sent out.

The El Rancho also has a money transfer station, which investigators determined was used to send drug money back to Mexico.
