Parkinson’s disease in a dish: Researchers reproduce the abnormal oscillations in brain neurons
bnormal oscillations in neurons that control movement, which likely cause the tremors that characterize Parkinson’s disease, have long been reported in patients with the disease. Now, University at Buffalo researchers working with stem cells report that they have reproduced these oscillations in a petri dish, paving the way for much faster ways to screen for new treatments or even a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

The paper is published online today (May 2) in Cell Reports.

“With this new finding, we can now generate in a dish the neuronal misfiring that is similar to what occurs in the brain of a Parkinson’s patient,” said Jian Feng, PhD, senior author on the paper and professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB. “A variety of studies and drug discovery efforts can be implemented on these human neurons to speed up the discovery of a cure for Parkinson’s disease.”

The work provides a useful platform for better understanding the molecular mechanisms at work in the disease, he added.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

As someone who has family members with both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's this is a Great Leap Forward. And hopefully they'll cure these horrible diseases soon

They probably already given it to Hill Dog. That is why she walked down those steps very good. Made it through all the debates.

I still saw some tremors and when she got on the planes, with all those questions and lights, she had a freeze.

That doctor says she has freezes and brain stops. When she did the wiggle, that was one too, but she did that smile that she always does when she is having a freeze.

I learned recently that a discovery was made that "spinning" (fast cycling on a stationary bicycle) exercise can halt Parkinson's symptoms in patients with active Parkinson's for up to two weeks at a time, after just one spinning workout. It does something to reset things for a spell.

I got my Dad one of those pedal things that you can put on the floor. His legs go 'dead' on him, and his balance isn't great, so I thought a stationary bike might be an accident waiting to happen. He doesn't do it enough to notice a difference, and I'm not close enough to nag him about it.

I had read about the benefits of it as well.

My Dad has had Parkinson's for years, and I've always found it strange that he doesn't really have a tremor...And it's got nothing to do with his meds because even when they begin to wear off, there is still no tremor.
