Strange Violent Weather in Southwest, last night.
It is typical to have 20 - 40 mile an hour sustained winds during a hot, dry day here on the northern NM-AZ line. However, the nights are usually quiet, and during rainy times it is quiet.

Last night we had cloudy skies, lightening and thunder, very slight rain, and no wind. Then, at about 3 AM my husband and I heard something like a train approaching and sat up in our bed in alarm.

It was wind! It hit us like a tornado and passed on - lasting at this location for about 2 minutes. Then, all was silent again except for distant lightening.

This happened 4 or 5 times between 3 and 5 AM. "It" tore the roof off of our pro panel green house (50 mph sustained winds have not yet done this) and picked up various objects and rolled or threw them. It was quite dark so we couldn't see what "it" looked like.

The silence between blasts was completely still and calm - like weather right before a tornado.

Anyway - this has never happened before. My husband grew up here - and I've been here for 17 years.

Anyone else experiencing strange weather?

Not recently but these walls of wind ('haboobs' when they're loaded with dust and/or sand) are not uncommon at certain times of the year here in the southwest. They can be pretty spectacular.

I live in the central NM mountains and yes, weird weather for this time of year. Last week two feet of snow. Next day 75 and mud. Last evening giant hail, about golf ball sized. Today violent thunderstorms and way to much rain. Fuck me if I don't need an Ark!

Yes, it's true, we rarely get rain this time of year. In fact, March - June is our dry season and it will usually not rain for months at a time. There is a lake some distance from us that has been dry for years. We were there two days ago and it was nearly full!

Shortly after my first post we got hit by a hail storm too - the largest ones were between the size of a penny and a nickle - so not too big - but we've never had hail that large where we are. Usually our hail never gets bigger than a sweet pea.

Funny I never heard the term 'haboob.' We do have large dust devils here (probably the same thing) usually during a hot dry day. There was no dust involved in what happened last night.
