Re: Microsoft issues ‘highly unusual’ Windows XP patch to prevent massive ransomware attack
I have windows 8 version and I downloaded updates (I had shut off updates years ago) but they will not install until I shut down laptop.

I am unsure of what to do.

Anybody?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72985360

Uh..im pretty sure you should RESTART your laptop...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72775181

I mostly just put in sleep mode.
If I restart, the updates will be installed.
I don't know much, that's why I ask.

Anyone else?

There are still people on Windows XP? I thought they stopped supporting XP, too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71689621

only a complete dumbass would be on anything higher than XP

I have often thought this too....
I cannot believe people even use any iOS whether it be pc, tablet, or iphone. I do use windows 8.1 on my personal laptop, but I have it locked down in a way that I haven't downloaded ANY UPDATES. My laptop doesn't even know about updates. I just have the install with several programs to block all the 'tethering' back to microsoft. I also made sure to delete anything and stop anything that would have any way to download or install anything to do with windoze10 which is malware in its own right.

I could probably make more money at work if I learned the finer points of securing theirs and other companies servers. This will become very valuable knowledge in the aftermath of this ransomware exploit. I understand the concepts behind security just not the actual steps it would take to provide much needed security.

What do you bet Microsoft itself was behind the attacks in order to force massive system upgrades.

I had automatic updates shut off on my 8.1 system and they still managed to put updates onto my system. I uninstalled them one by one and they were put back on.

My next computer will be linux. That is it, I am done with those cunts.

This is strange. Maybe XP can't be monitored like new operating systems. So all this is a big false flag to get ms spy ware into millions of XP machines.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72222427

Exactly what I was thinking, too.
I can't imagine that Microsoft suddenly started giving a shit.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74661623

This makes no sense, what do you think this whole WannaCry thing is about? Windows XP being TOO secure that it has a massive vulnerability that takes down countless systems across the globe? So TPTB install a patch to uh.. make it easier to hack? What are you smoking.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74847169

To make it easier for THEM to hack and then force in new O/S updates like the Windows 10 crap that infested anyone with a Windows 7 or 8.1 PC until Microsoft was forced to back down.

The "patch" is no doubt to enable their spyware for those using older versions who haven't been forced onto Windows 8 or 10 yet. They know people are refusing them because they are very intrusive and loaded with spy shit....so they gotta get you to download this "patch" ...you know to "help" you

No reason to get the patch, just have your back-ups up to date. Then if you get infected, just go back to vanilla settings and re-install all your data. It's also a good idea to have a hard copy of the XP Operating system with updated drivers....

Re: Microsoft issues ‘highly unusual’ Windows XP patch to prevent massive ransomware attack
The XP patch has been available to those on extended support.
They just made it publicly available now, too.
With up to 140,000,000 million XP workstations still running, it is the right thing to do (in their mind mostly for PR purposes).

If you are running XP and worried about this single patch being the one that spies on you... think of the hundreds you have not had installed since support ended.
That is a large number of vulnerabilities with countless exploits.

I do not expect the next ransomware attack to be as nice.
Expect an 0-Day to appear at some point that gets used for the same purpose.
This is still the same poorly-coded operating system that has been down this road many times.
People panic in groups and recover individually.

 Quoting: TheToolMan

The issue over time with XP becomes lack of drivers.
Companies stop writing the driver to work with XP peripherals.

At some point, a 3rd party will need to create adaptive links via Win 7 driver packs....or people will have to move to WIN 7.

The other issue is most of Windows XP O/S's are 32bit.
A big problem for memory adressing on everything from USB to on board memory.
There are work-arounds at times, but it's adding layers of complexity, and software adaptations, just to make it work.

Still, WinXP is still good enough for MANY people and their basic computing needs even with the limitations.

What if its NOT a Patch?

Its a scheme to force XP-Tards to buy / upgrade to new OS?

It will crash all XP-Tards and wipe their data?
?

There is billions in it for them...
