Microsoft issues ‘highly unusual’ Windows XP patch to prevent massive ransomware attack

If you're using Microsoft anything you've always had the potential to be watched. Sitting there bragging about XP and admonishing win 10 is amusing, you should be on linux if you're doing illegal stuff you don't want someone to know about otherwise using microsoft you already lost the game being played.

Glad this gaming rig I purchased from Digital storm came with win 10, best version of a microsoft os yet and I've been on MS products since win 95.
Absolutely no network issues with older devices seeing win 10 which has always been MS Bane.

The simplified menu's and everything easily located on those new menu's plus you can still right click start for all the old menu's, from what I see is a bunch of lame complaints from people that have never used win 10, because once you do you won't go back to any other inferior product. And oh you turn off all that Orwellian spying stuff you're so concerned about, i'm sure the NSA and CIA are interested in your masturbation habits.

How do you display the actual changes you made using netshell commands? Will it show a list of recently closed ports?

Not sure how Win 10 works but when I got hit with that money bug all I did was enter safe mode and do a basic system restore to get rid of it

Microsoft has given us every reason to distrust them. I haven't trusted anything from MS since about April / May 2016 when they became overtly deceptive.

One can only imagine how many mission critical systems out there are still using XP like atm machines, hospitals, utilities etc.

Do you have to shut down your computer to enter safe mode? I have Win7 and from what I understand, I have to start it in safemode.

Bitdefender was a pain to use. It hung up and crashed my computer constantly. And when I decided to cancel them and changed virus protection, they continued to charge my card! Had to call my cc company to block that shit.

One of the machines I run is with WinXP 64bit and the last service pack for that version which is SP2.

I have never had a virus or worm on this or any other Windows machine I setup at home for 17 years and counting, and I don't run AV software.

I simply disabled everything I didn't need - most notably the Server service.

Obviously I don't store anything critical on this machine alone.

There are a few articles around the web about disabling unneccessary items, but very few of them mention this service which is funny because it is the biggest single win of them all from a security perspective.

CAN CONFIRM XP PATCH working

LololoL Yeah right MS has always been able to spy on you the only difference with 10 is new cyber security laws made them have to tell you and give you the option to opt out of the more invasive ones. How the hell do you think they've gotten all the information on what to patch and update? By people volunteering the info? No your computer has always sent crash, incompatibility, and hardware conflict info. SMFH

The NSA can see everything you do with your computer, hear everything you say on your phone and read all texts and email without a warrant and you fuckers are bitching about MS collecting program and incompatibility issues.

They have gone far beyond "crash, incompatibility, and hardware conflict info" I would not call that spying.

What they are doing now on the other hand is most definitely spying, and data gathering.

i may be jinxing myself by saying this but I only run a basic firewall all the time. otherwise no security software because it slows computers down and eats system resources.

once every few months I run malewarebytes and a couple other scans. The most I end up with are unwanted tracking cookies.

I NEVER open anything I am sent in email or click links on pages that look odd. You can normally tell the real links from the ads and stuff if you pay attention.

My wife on the other-hand has to run several security software and virus protection 34/7 because she sometimes works from home. (She works for the State of Tennessee) she gets stuff on her computer I have never heard of. Once a week at minimal I will have yo take her laptop and do the best I can to clean it out so it will run fast enough for her to get he work done, she then takes it to her work and they give her a loaner and keep hers a couple days. The really bad thing is almost every employee there has the same issues and they have enough loaner systems that almost each employee has their own depending on the department, only low level entry job people use a general system that can be used by more than one person.

I am lucky enough that the head of their IT department used to be a tech where I was her immediate supervisor, I am officially authorized to troubleshoot her system if need be.
They have copies of my background checks the FBI ran on me when I was a off site tech and had to do some work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Where at the time (2004-2006) they had systems running windows 3.1

When I went on site my car was checked inside out plus dogs sniffed it, they inspected my toolbox which normally was 1 screwdriver with several bits in the end-cap and something to test power supplies.

No flash drives, memory cards or hard drives of any type were allowed in, Do not even try and bring in a camera.

Inside the place was clean but looked like it had not been remolded since it was built in the 40s

On the way out I had to go through a radiation monitoring station.

The place was very secure with armed guards all around but the computer systems were very outdated. But I would say each system done only one job and nothing else.

Go to your firewall.
Block the ports from there with "DENY".... if that is the way you want to go.

Be aware though, it COULD stop other legit things from working that use those ports.

I am going to get back to my old computer, the one that runs XP Pro SP3 ans see how I can turn off unnecessary Windows services.

I always make sure to keep a copy of all my files on a external hard disk with frequent updates just in case.

You can block a lot of the services too with a software based firewall in Win XP.
Some you need occasionally, so you can unblock them and reblock them when you are done.
You can block them by port and/or Process.

If you execute a state check before you make changes you will find that on most XP systems there are 4 ports open.

netsh firewall show state

If so proceed as initially posted and you will have closed the vunerability. The worm uses a NetBT exploit.

Windows-key+R
Run the command cmd
A new small window will open

execute

netsh firewall show state

if ports 137,138,139 and 445 appear ENABLE or open proceed with the commands I posted earlier.

You cannot do that using the GUI. Only using netsh.

Or create an IPsec filter using the MMC console but that is far more complicated.
