I think that's part of it. If it is not forced, then it is human nature to be curious and try to find out more on your own in your own time. But when you are told you are some bad person because you are not best friends with people who are unlike you, it kind of rubs the wrong way, especially when only ONE of the groups is treated this way while the other is patted on the back for not wanting to be close to you.
