That is total bullshit and complete ripoff! These people spent thousands of dollars earning a USELESS college degree and cannot get a job earning more than peanuts for a living. It is a total RIPOFF. College is a RIPOFF. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13127957 Op, you seem kind of stupid HELL, I am telling the TRUTH, would you like to speak with my friends going into debt for 20K-35K for a college degree and finding no jobs whatsoever that will hire then for a decent wage? What is their degree in? That's part of the problem. Sociology? Philosophy? History? Yeah, there's a strong market for that... I'm 33 years old so I'm on the boarder of this millennial garbage. Luckily my father was a hard worker and always had great advice. Here's what I think my dad would say to someone in this position: Find out what he likes and keeps his interest. For me at that age it was cars, so I'm going to use that example. Find a shop who needs someone to sweep and clean and DO IT FOR FREE. Ya, crazy concept but it shows initiative. There are some old timers out there that would love to pass down knowledge to a young go getter. Show up every day, ON TIME, don't make excuses, never give attitude and soak up as much knowledge as you possibly can. This has worked for me and also worked for the guy that I hired. I worked for a company building marketing materials from scratch. One of the warehouse guys who liked art and working with his hands came to me one day and asked if he could come help me out for free after he clocked out of the warehouse. How could I say no to that? He proved himself over a couple of months and they eventually brought him on board with me full time and no longer had to work warehouse. When I left the company he inherited my position as visual marketing director for a big clothing company. Sometimes it takes sacrificing your time and effort to get what you want in life. Sometimes you don't even get anything in physically in return but you sure as hell learned from the experience. He's going to have to go old school with it and pound the pavement. Submitting your application online with 2,000 other people isn't going to work. |

My point is if the kid cannot get a job with a HS diploma then get into a trade school and find a career. Pick the wrong one the first time... try another. Failing at getting a burger flipping job should be enough to light a fire. As far as college.. my degree has taken me much further, but it is not for everyone. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74298725 Networking is key, you have to know someone somewhere to get him in the door. A high school diploma is not going to open many doors. Start making calls ...to all your friends and contacts - is your company hiring - he is anxious to learn the business- change it for each business. My friends son got a job at Pizza Hut ...worked there for 5 yrs got to asst manager - went to Bob Evans ...ran the grill and learned to cook ...stayed there 9 years ...went to cook at Applebee's ...got all the way up to $14,50/hr in those 15 years and has two kids now - a beater car - a baby mama (says can't afford to get married-she would lose the benefits for single Mom)! Let your kid struggle now - or get out of your comfort zone and find him something...kids build self esteem by having Success... Give him some tools and projects to do around the house - fix sticky drawers- paint - to show responsibility ...tell him to youtube to learn the right way. |
