Walt Disney World's first water park, Disney River Country, closed 25 years after debuting in 1976. It has remained shut for more than 15 years. The park's pool was filled in with concrete last year.

Seph Lawless, a Cleveland-based photographer whose work includes abandoned spaces like the inside of the vacant Chicago-area Lincoln Mall, took photos of the empty Disney River Country for a series available in his forthcoming book, "Autopsy of America: The Death of a Nation."

I find these images of collapsing America disturbing.
There is no good reason why any real estate should be abandoned.

Well, I guess there are 2:
1. Environmental catastrophic pollution
2. Taxes
 Quoting: Xenophobe

Disturbing but fascinating. There was an abandoned hospital in Newark near Rutgers, that couldn't look any more like a haunted mansion if you tried.
All characters and events in this forum --even those based on real people-- are entirely fictional. All celebrity comments are impersonated...poorly. The above post contains coarse language and due to the content it should not be viewed by anyone.

I loved that place!
anyway - her is a great article on River Country with photos, etc. There was never an official reason why it closed - it just did. It is around the Fort Wilderness area and rather a small area in Disney terms, so they just closed and let it be.

Sorry but Philly is booming. it's hardly collapsed. Unlike real sh*tholes like. New York, PHL is doing awesome. You're delusional if you don't know that. NY STEALS so much taxpayer funds. NY and IL are the most crooked croniest place in the US. Taxpayers prop up Illinois and NY. They don't have any means of running a actual government for the people and balancing budgets like other big boy cities like Atlanta and Philadelphia and Dallas

I will never, EVER forgive Disney (I guess Eisenberg was the CEO at the time) for tearing down and filling in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride.

That was the single most amazing experience of my childhood.

And they drained it, filled in the lagoon, and turned it into Nemo's Bedpan or some damned thing.

Couldn't agree more. We took our kids to it and it was one of their favorite things. Went back years later, and you are right, it is "Nemo's bedpan". Sucked.

They abandoned it because there were amoebas in the water.
If you want to see decline look at a graph of Disney ticket prices over the years.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18849480

And then realize that the only thing they have added since the surge in the mid 2000's is Avatar which has no originality to it.

Dances With Smurfs.
I'll be jiggered if I can figure out how:
1. A genius filmmaker like Jim Cameron could do such a yawner scifi lefty waste of time.
2. it made a BILLION dollars!

huh
 Quoting: Xenophobe

It made 2 and a half billion actually. A lot of people wanted to see 3D eyecandy even though lower budget movies had been doing it for years prior.

I went down to FLA on family road trips to Disney and other touristy stuff and loved it. I went back on a business trip for a few weeks a few years ago and was amazed at how much of a shithole most of the state is. Ignore the gators, heat, humidity and all the natural things which would keep any sane person away. It seemed like I was traveling through one very long ghetto! There is a shitload of money on the coastlines, but the second you go inland it seems to turn to garbage.

These pictures make me feel strange. I went to a hundred places like that as a kid having fun but it's also beautiful to see how nature takes over anything we build if we don't use it.

What changed is every park was uniquely different, now they're all generic and corporate. The first parks were made by people with dreams of making something fun only to be replaced by those who dream of nothing but money. It sucks the soul, the art, the fun and spontaneity out of anything it touches.
