Puerto Rico goes to the polls for statehood 51 state? And 70 billion in bankruptcy... Will americans object?

Doesn't have to be statehood....indepedance would work too...its not about Puerto Rican's getting out...its about the USA letting Puerto Rican's all the way in or the USA should get out

... which has nothing whatsoever to do with becoming a state. The "United States" is just that, states that have decided to unite for common benefit and shared responsibility. The people in California write their own laws which are in many cases totally different and in some cases oppositional to the people in Tennessee. New York and Alabama are likewise polar opposites. That said, our united agreement to mutual benefit means that the people in Mississippi have agreed to bind themselves together with the people of Michigan for mutual economic, defensive, and international relation benefit.

Puerto Rico wants no part of that. All they want is to benefit from being a protected territory and to be Puerto Rico alone with no responsibility to the rest of the states. They are freeloaders. Let them continue to enjoy their pretty beaches in the Caribbean on their own.

You really should get informed before posting...trump is president as Puerto Rico is part of USA...federal laws apply there also....its American not a foreign country...apllebees Saks fifth have...burger king and mickey Des just like any other state on continental USA....Puerto Rican's are as American as apple pie

whenever there is a conflict, puertorican troops are among the first to be deployed, so we have paid with blood our "entry fee" to statehood.

I agree...the USA should just get rid of it altogether...grant idependance and get it did already....but you really should do your homework...the USA takes much more than they give to PR

Its already part of the states. The union just had to make it official with a vote. By the way until the 70 billion dollar dept and decrease in its population pr wanted nothing to do with statehood. Now it will flourish and it too will get punished with illegal mexicans. Trump will have another state in the red.

... and yet Puerto Rico has repeatedly voted not to become a state because it wants to be independent. By all means, be independent. If you want to remain a territory then do so. If you want to become a state then do so. I have never said Puerto Rico should be kicked out. It' just that the people there have kept themselves in perpetual limbo not wanting to commit to being a state and not wanting to let go of the benefits of having a world superpower as a big brother. Frankly it is more than a little irritating, bordering on insulting.

If the United States is not good enough for you to join as a full state then go enjoy your independence on your own. That is what being independent is all about. Piss or get off the pot.

since i was a kid, one of the main parties has always been fighting for statehood.

there has been several referendum, and little by little the statehood movement gained traction, til 2012 when for the first time a whooping 61% voted for statehood.

We don't need Puerto Rico.
