Puerto Rico’s government is banking on a push for statehood to solve the structural issues that led to its financial crisis.
Puerto Ricans will vote Sunday to decide the territory’s status. If statehood wins, as expected, the island will enact what’s known as the Tennessee Plan, an avenue to accession by which U.S. territories send a congressional delegation to demand to be seated in Washington.Puerto Rico will send two senators and five representatives, chosen by Gov. Ricardo Rosselló (D), later this year, once the plan is put into action.

Aren't you ignorant. I'm an American retired in Mexico. I also lived in Puerto Rico for years. Let me educate you. Puerto Rico is suffering the same crisis Detroit suffered. The only difference is that they cannot file for bankruptcy protection because they are a territory (colony), not a state. If they would have been allowed this avenue, they could have been on their way to recovery years ago. Wall Street also had them by the balls, giving them money tax free. Investors loved that.

Puerto Rico is the most developed country in America (after the United States), if you categorize them as a county. No country comes even close. Puerto Rico lost 64,000 during WW2 and has been fighting in every US conflict ever since. Korea, Vietnam, both gulf wars, etc. Puerto Ricans (natural US born citizens) pay US payroll taxes. They have no representation in the US Congress and no right to vote for a US president. It's the only territory in the Americas that hasn't been independent.

So either they become independent or they become a US state. They cannot continue being a colony. And I can guarantee you've never visited Puerto Rico. Click on Google images and find out for yourself. Aside from the financial crisis, Puerto Rico must be one of the most beautiful places on Earth. They are just hanging by their balls right now. Any other state would have been back on their feet years ago.

And by the way, things are not looking that peachy in Canada with Fidel Castro's son (Trudeau). The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. So next time you open a thread, inform yourself and don't appear so intellectually challenged. Visit Puerto Rico and then talk. Many states in the USA would love to look like Puerto Rico. I've been to many shithole cities that don't even come close.

Peace.
