ISIS in the Philippines and Australia's surrender of South East Asia
This was sent to me by a friend. I don't know anything about the situation personally. It's from an Australian source.

ISIS in the Philippines and Australia's surrender of South East Asia
25 June 2017

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is aware of the threats in our region, but still our military and diplomatic focus remains on the Middle East (Image via @rickrick888)
Australia’s interests are strongest in our region, so why do we prioritise events in the Middle East, Europe and America? Former diplomat Bruce Haigh reports.

AUSTRALIA'S INTEREST in the politics and prosperity of South East Asia is stronger than that of the United States — however you might think that was not the case by the priority Australia gives to events in the Middle East, Europe and America.

Australia is inextricably linked to South East Asia through geography, trade, education and population. It is where the greatest expansion in our trade will take place. Close or linked time zones make business easier. Shorter air and shipping routes enhance contact and productivity.

Why, then, does Australia expend so much money, lives and time trying to crush the Taliban and ISIS in Iraq and Syria when we have a potentially bigger and more complex problem emerging on our door step?

For decades, the radical Muslim organisation, Abu Sayyaf, has fought the Philippine army and police in an attempt to establish a caliphate on the island of Mindanao. They have recently been joined by ISIS fighters forced out of the Middle East. Their route to Mindanao is through Malaysia and Indonesia by boat.

On 23 May, fighting broke out between the Philippine Army and Abu Sayyaf in the predominantly Muslim city of Marawi on Mindanao. Abu Sayyaf is led by Isnilon Hapilon, a man with a US$5 million bounty on his head. He has joined with the Maute group led by two brothers and both groups have been bolstered by ISIS fighters from Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Chechnya.

The fighting, which was predicted to be over in a week, looks set to drag on into a second month. This attests to the skill and experience of the ISIS fighters, who have deployed resources, including strategically placed snipers, on the basis of local knowledge provided by Abu Sayyaf. They occupy the business district of Marawi.

The Philippine Army has used armoured vehicles and conducted air strikes. The U.S. has deployed a small group of special forces personnel and are providing intelligence through Lockheed P-3 Orion surveillance. The President of the Philippines, Rodrego Duterte has denied knowledge of U.S. involvement.

Mawari had a population of 200,000 many have fled the fighting, some are being held hostage by the fundamentalists. Around 400 civilians, soldiers and radicals have been killed, with around twice that number wounded, including children and ABC journalist, Adam Harvey.

Abu Sayyaf was connected to the 2002 Bali bombing. Extremism and membership of extremist groups is growing in Indonesia and Malaysia, and the presence and influence of ISIS is expanding.

They are suppressing stories of the Islamic State's (isis) spread to the Philippines in our news media.

They want us to think they have them on the ropes and the threat is under control, just as they have since day one.

Meanwhile the Islamic state (isis) is actually spreading all over the world and they literally stilo control the world's highest producing oil field which is in Iraq.

It's as if the globalist owned news media is conspiring to conceal the spread of the obviously enabled Islamic State (isis.)

If you want to know why Australia's priority is middle east it is because Australias has and always will be Americas little lap dog that hapilly goes running off to any far flung land when America "asks" us to join a fight. All I have to say is that because America thinks it's the worlds police, why doesn't America help stop ISIS in the Phillipines?

Australia has never had any real control over South East Asia, seems America has dropped the ball yet again.

Re: ISIS in the Philippines and Australia's surrender of South East Asia
In a mostly predominant Catholic/Christian country of the Philippines with an estimated Muslim population of 6%, the Philippine government has been combating Muslim factions such as the MILF, MNLF, and Abu Sayaf to name a few for decades. The ultimate objective for the Muslim factions was to establish an autonomous governing region for Mindanao. The Philippine government had much success with counter insurgency with the MILF and MNLF in the past; however, the Abu Sayyaf group making international headlines for abduction, ransom, and beheading of foreign tourists visiting the region along with small Muslim factions such as Maute Group have been radicalized, trained, and funded by ISIS fighters from the Middle East wanting to establish an ISIS stronghold in Marawi City to set-up a Caliphate and spread this radicalized sick ideology to neighboring regions throughout Mindanao.

President Duterte and the Philippine military have vowed to crush the birthing of ISIS in Marawi City at any cost for the past month with some success. Their expedited efforts to rid the Maute Group from the city has been foiled by these ISIS militants using civilians as human shields and well placed ISIS militant snipers in civilian populated areas in the city that are unable to flee from the conflict. Fortunately, with the consent of the Philippine government, a small contingent of military advisers from the United Special Forces and the Australian Military have been assisting the Philippine Military in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and counter insurgency training to prevent ISIS militants from establishing a foothold in Mindanao. Kudos to the Australian government by being proactive in their sphere of influence in the Asia region by assisting the Philippines government rid this radical ideology. And special thanks to our US Special forces for the training and military advisory assistance to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Very accurate and concise report. I would even guess you're likely stationed at Andersen AFB as a civilian contractor working as an analyst for a company. I recognize the writing style.

Edit: If I could advise Duterte, I'd recommend he immediately withdraw from the ARMM (Muslim Autonomous Zone) treaty and declare it a war zone.
1. Have aircraft drop flyers that Philippine civilians are to report any hostile forces/activities to a hotline.
2. Establish a safe corridor/zone for civilians to flee.
3. Mosques would be considered legitimate military targets.
4. Anyone left in the area would be considered an enemy combatant.
5. Commit full forces of PNA/PNP and ask for US SOCOM intelligence, logistical and advisor support.

Yes, there will be collateral damage as a result. But much less than these "surgical strikes" and ongoing terrorist activities would amount.

Funny that the CIA went into the Phillipines a few years ago, started getting rid of the local king pins, and staging a few murders. Now ISIS follows ...

But yes, the story has been suppressed here in Australia, and its not good news for us to have them taking over a country so close to us.

Ah yes. Now I remember. You mentioned being retired and on a fixed income some time ago. Good to see you! GLP is such a haven for professionals who have some genuine knowledge/experience and will share it. hf

It's sometimes difficult to avoid the ban hammer on some of these issues (pointing to dents in head.) But the mods have changed, so once in a while maybe you could plz give us some real news.

You have seen what the US news is, and IMP the "analysts" are too often serving the same master the US>>Australia serves.
