If you give everyone $50k, that's the same as giving everyone $0, $10k, or $100 million. Do you people really have no idea how scarcity works? What will happen is, in order to keep the UBI of any worth, govt will have to implement price controls, which removes business incentive, which decreases productivity, which eventually turns the country into another starving communist shit hole. UBI is dumb as rocks. Complete idiocy. The only people who support UBI are elites who want to use it to control people, and sheep who lay down for elites, i.e. every communist shit hole ever.

You know why people never learn from history? Arrogance and pride. Every generation with their head in the clouds think they can achieve some utopia or "peace on earth" with self-righteous idealism. They all ignore history because they think they are better and will get it right. But they can never get it right because it is against the nature of man. They are blinded by idealism and cannot face the practical realities of greed, scarcity, corruption, etc... In truth it is all driven by the most base vice of envy. They dress up their envy with some flowery language of idealism and humanism, but a piece of shit with frosting on it is still a piece of shit!

The new generation of hippies think they can solve scarcity and envy with their AI, robots, and socialism/communism, but the higher their arrogance soars, the harder they will fall, like all their hippie ancestors. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong!

Are you talking about making America a communist country? You're nuts.

Communism has failed miserably.

Socialism has been tried in the past and has failed miserably.

All forms of man-made governments have already failed.

Repeating the past types will fail again and again.

Only God's government/kingdom, with Jesus as king, will fix mankind's problems. This will be done in the future.

That is the one to hope for.

Re: "Universal Basic Income" makes sense even for Republicans IF they actually do the math.
The reason why conservatives would reject UBI is because we do actually do the math. The REAL math, not liberal myopic math. Once you change something in the system, especially in an economy as big and complex as that of the U.S., the equilibrium is disturbed and there are ripples and chain effects and many "unintended" consequences will occur. The reason we are in a mess in a first place is because generations of liberals one after another force their "progressivism" on the people and end up making things worse. Just look at Obamacare.

The reason why all nations and empires rise and fall, and even the U.S. will one day die, is because people mess it up more and more until it is dead. The Elites lust for power and control, and are masters of deception. They wear wolves-in-sheeps clothing to trick the people something is good when it is actually bad.

The worst part is that so-called "liberals" will do anything in pursuit of "progress." They worship social "progress" and so will sacrifice everything else. The ends justify the means, so they employ thought-control, persecution, and other fascist tactics "for the good of the people."

Humans suffer the same grave sin that caused the fall of Satan: PRIDE. Humans thinks they can solve world problems using their own wisdom and mechanisms, but the end result is always worse. Always! Human society is doomed to collapse and their attempts to prevent it only speed it along. Human's idolatry of humanism and transhumanism is the epitome of irony. Problems in society are caused by human sinful nature and cannot be solved by worldly wisdom or government solutions. Humans try to live apart from God and achieve perfection on their own, to become their own "God," and will only fail. Look beyond this world, beyond its temporary comforts and materialism, and go to Jesus. He is the only answer. There is no other solution!

Giving people something they didn't earn is always a horrible idea. Look at public housing. People have no sense of responsibility to take care of things they didn't earn. Heck even the shared laboratory in my department is the filthiest place on the floor. Even highly knowledgeable and responsible people refuse to maintain public areas as if they were their own.

If you give people money for not working, then they will never work again.

Tom cruise and these other Hollywood phonies do not deserve millions of dollars to be in a movie.

Meanwhile hardworking Americans are killing themselves in labor jobs only to make just enough to survive.

The wealth gap is too large and it's one if the major reasons our country is in such bad shape.

Let the Hollywood actors and sports pros get paid minimum wage see how they start complaining.

Wrong, the problem with most of the existing government payout programs is that the liberals have allowed ANYONE to claim benefits. You cannot offer food stamps and welfare to the entire world and have a sustaining program. It is idiotic. The ONE key OP mentions is that this new program is for US CITIZENS ONLY. Common sense but sleazy liberal politicians want kickbacks from lobbyists.

Instead of just reflexively opposing a Basic Income in the US, the Republicans should actually look at the advantages.

If the new Basic Income Law is passed so that it completely REPLACES welfare payments, food stamps, Social Security payments, disability payments, and ALL other government payments, the savings in paper shuffling and bureaucracy alone would pay for the new program.

Also, by writing the new law to apply to "US Citizens ONLY," it would eliminate Billions of dollars in payments to illegals in all of those replaced programs.

A Basic Income would also increase the buying power for retailers, etc. This idea makes perfect sense from both a liberal and conservative perspective.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75011669

Universal basic income only makes sense if there are absolutely no jobs for anyone. But at the same time it makes money worthless.

Since so many nations are pushing to have it, it means job losses over the next 5 to 10 years will be large.

They will push everyone onto "universal basic income" (aka nationwide welfare), then when money becomes totally worthless they will usher in a Star Trek like society where there is no money.

That, or they will massively depopulate the whole world to free up more jobs.

If you study how communist regimes come about, you will see the plan exactly is communist. What looks like utopia on paper turns into communist totalitarian dictatorship in practice. You are hung up on optimism and ideology and completely ignoring the the practical consequences and ripple/chain-effects, which history warns about over and over again. You are too arrogant in your own intellectual ability and think you can get it right, but fail to see how many before you thought the same thing and have gotten it wrong.

No it doesn't.

You're trying to shift what are already far too many federal dollars in welfare entitlements to another entitlement, ostensibly disguised as 'entitlement for all', which is the OPPOSITE of entitlement.

*This* conservative mind would prefer elimination of 85% of those dollars and a working, productive population.

Math? Shuffling money around like that isn't math, it's closer to laundering. lol.

END ALL of the other bloated government payout programs. Social Security (which is going bankrupt anyway), welfare, food stamps, disability and any other government payouts.

OK OP, since you're still here, you said this would make sense to Republicans if we actually do the math.

So let's do the math OP. How much would this "basic income" be per month?
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

I would say $2000 per adult, $1000 per dependent while ENDING ALL of the existing programs. The bureaucratic savings alone would be tremendous as well as the dumping of all the illegals off of those programs.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75011669

That would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 trillion dollars per year.

We only collect about 3 trillion per year in taxes. Eliminating all other welfare programs and social security would save us a trillion, but that leaves us still 2 trillion per year short just to pay for the universal income nevermind the rest of our budget.

Where's the money gonna come from OP???
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

I'm pretty sure UBI would also get rid of all those bloated retirement checks that government workers receive. You could also lower government pay down considerably and tell them to hit the road if they don't like it.

it makes the poor think they're getting a good deal, when in fact everything will go up, making them MUCH worse off than they were before, it drags the lower middle class down into the lower class, as employers use this bullshit more and more, and even the upper middle class get dragged down towards the floor.

Let's make this really easy.

There are 300 million people in the US. (There are more but let's keep the math simple.)

Do $1,000 per person and you're at 300 billion.

That's what you're paying out at $1,000 per person, PER MONTH!

Do it for a year and you're over 3.5 trillion.

Remember, you said Universal, not selective, everyone gets it.

Imagine the cottage industry you'll create for women having babies...
 Quoting: Larry D. Croc

NOT EVERYONE. Under $24,000. READ OPs explanations. Very good idea and I think it would actually cost LESS by eliminating huge bureaucracies in each of those eliminated programs and eliminating non citizens from ANY benefits.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60052152

I did the math. I'm quitting my 40k job to be a stay-at-home dad. Will also have plenty of time to spend with my stay-at-home wife.

That's $24,000 per adult. Plus $12,000 for each of my 5 dependent children. $108,000 in annual benefits.

Even if you cut those benefits in half, I'm still going to make bank like never before by doing nothing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71923355

The numbers can be slightly adjusted for "max allowed" per family, etc.

Everyone is missing the three KEY points.
1. US CITIZENS ONLY. Right now, millions of illegals get US taxpayer food stamps, welfare, etc.
2. END ALL EXISTING GOVERNMENT PAYOUTS. That means ending the programs, the money they payout, the bloated staffs, etc. End food stamps, welfare, social security, disability, etc. END ALL of those programs and use that money to pay for ONE simple program that actually benefits everyone and the economy.
3. People are free to go out and make more to have better lives but the fear of becoming homeless is removed for US citizens.

OP - you keep throwing terms like "poor people" and "working class" around, yet are advocating basic income 'for all'.

Wut up wit dat?

 Quoting: Fret Wiz

I mean a income if you are unemployed or underemployed. If you are making more than $2000 per month, you dont get anything. If you are making less than that, you get the difference so that you make $2000. If you become unemployed, you get the $2000, VERY simple.

YES, I know that it would make low end workers not want to work but it would then make employers HAVE to pay more. It would be a different type of economy but once it settled in, I believe it makes very sound economic sense especially by ENDING ALL of the existing programs.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75011669

See, I disagree. If I was only making $2000/mo I would quit so I could get $2000/mo for doing nothing. Why get up and go to work if I can make the same amount by lying on my ass? The only way UBI would work would be if EVERYONE (citizens and non anchors only) got it even if they make $10 million a year.

Re: "Universal Basic Income" makes sense even for Republicans IF they actually do the math.
That is the stupidest idea I've heard in my life. So, why work? Why should I or anyone bust their ass at work and pay taxes to pay some lazy assholes money they didn't earn? Where is any incentive to invent anything or work overtime or pay taxes or anything? You are a fucking socialist dreaming of some utopia where everything is free. Grow up.

It doesn't have to be 100 percent socialism. Capitalism with a safety net. Hell we already have implemented socialist policies in the way of corporate subsidies.

If people aren't spending, the economy hits a plateau and then eventually degrades. UBI would allow people a small amount of money to aid with food and shelter allocation. Free up those resources, and people will be happier and more productive.

Of course, instead of UBI, we could tax the automated and put it back into welfare. But then were back to square one. UBI is the future short of national gentrification.

Why don't you just move to a country that is already socialist?

Re: "Universal Basic Income" makes sense even for Republicans IF they actually do the math.

 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

Hahhaah Your Icon of Burgess Meridith from the Twilight Zone episode where he is the Devil that runs a Linotype machine that prints FUTURE NEWS. Basic Income will not happen since the Democrats would loose many voters as the various welfare departments are shut down. Also, many of HHS departments are used to LAUNDER MONEY,ex: HUD. If the US doesnt wash illegal funds , other countries will and we will loose a ton of money.
