Trying to get strong? Forget muscles, you need to work out your NERVES by lifting heavy weights, new study finds
[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

Those trying to become stronger by putting in extra hours at the gym may be getting it all wrong, according to new research.

Researchers have found that engaging your nerves could be more important to gaining strength than working out your muscles.

In the body, specialised nerves known as motor neurons relay signals from the brain to the muscle tissue, which allows us to choose when we flex our muscles.

Scientists have now found that some types of exercise engage the nerves surrounding our muscle tissue more than others.

They discovered that lifting heavy weights engages the nerve cells more than lifting light weights, even if you do far fewer reps.

Lifting heavy weights can induce nerves to carry more signals from the brain to the muscles, making muscles stronger, the researchers found.

Just interested in getting bigger muscles bro!
Don't wanna be a power lifter. Lifting to heavy just increases to possibility of injury. And you don't want that!

I think you are wrong in your assessment.
Here is a quote from David Kingsbury, the man who train Hugh Jackman for his Wolverine role.
"Hugh hadn't done much direct strength work prior to training with me. He mostly worked in the 8-12 rep range. I always encourage low, 1-5 rep heavy work to stimulate myofibril hypertrophy. Then after the heavy work is done we move onto the higher rep schemes to encourage sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. By increasing your strength with the low reps, you increase your capacity with the higher reps, so I always plan heavy sets of the compound movements. The combination of the two styles brings the best gains."

Interesting article!
It still encourages a combination of low rep and later high rep exercises.
What I see in the gym all the time is young guys that load up the bar as heavy as they can for bench, squat and deadlift and go ahead and jerk for 1-3 reps.
Due to my a little more advanced age I usually only due exercises I can reach 8-16 reps. I can not lift as much as the young guys, but I achieved more muscle mass and more importantly no injuries.

Lifting heavy can be bad for tendons, ligaments, and decreases flexibility.

Do them all, switch em up.

Medium reps medium weight, heavy weight low reps and fast body movements with explosive power.

Scientific studies are too narrow and just want to prove a point but miss out on the whole picture.

haha.

Seems like the same subject to me. Is all that pollution on the mainland going to your head?

Do a one handed push up with your feet on the bed, hold it for 1 minute and tell me if that's heavy. If that's too easy, go on your fists or fingers. If that's too easy, lift up one foot. Then hold the pose at the base for 2-3 minutes.

Why do I need external weights if I'm walking round with 70 kilos built in?

Hindu Pushups are the perfect cross between yoga + weights.

I never liked doing hours long gym sets, I saw good results doing high weights, low descending reps. Even when I was too busy for the gym, I always did pull ups/chin ups/push ups, all of which can be tailored for a lot of muscles. Always surprised my bigger musclehead friends when grappling, boxing, etc.

Uh. What "new research"?

I was a competetive powerlifter back in early 2000s and even us amateurs knew that the central nervous system (CNS) was the key. It's been known since 1970s since the Russians pioneered their scientific method for weightlifters.

Lots of muscle mass was, in fact, a handicap because you wanted to stay under a certain weight to compete in your weight class. The key to success was to train your CNS to the max without adding body weight.

Many short sets (3-4 reps) with total load (reps x sets x weights) ramping up every week until you were borderline overtrained. The load diagram would look like a sawtooth waveform with the baseline increasing over the weeks. Then you'd have a week focusing on speed (i.e. training your skeletal muscle nerves): You'd do short EXPLOSIVE reps with light weights (50-60% of your target max). After that it was competition and/or record breaking time.

Carbon 60 Antioxidant also is super for recovery and endurance... order from www.carbon60oliveoil.com.. It works at the DNA level.. for months in the body.
