The historic 111-year-old home of Westmoreland Mayor Jerry Kirkman burned to the ground Thursday afternoon.

The fire was discovered around 3 p.m. by Kirkman's wife Jacquelyn, who smelled smoked inside the home, located at 5518 Austin Peay Highway, but could not find a fire. It was during a second walk-through of the residence when she saw smoke coming up through the living room floor and called the fire department.

"About that time people were already starting to see smoke coming from under the house," Kirkman said. "They said the living room area from what they could tell just burst out and went up."

The three-story wood-frame home, built in 1904, was a total loss.
