So sad. My husband and I used to go to Mariposa to play in the creeks and pan for gold.

Nice people there. I'm praying for the fire to be controlled/extinguished.

That terrain is horrible. A worst case scenario will be if it goes higher in elevation and torches the Dead Ponderosa Pine Trees. That would be one hell of an Inferno.

Ha, I hike all that area and know it well. Coulterville and Dogtown look vulnerable but Mariposa looks safe. Here is a website to see the up to date hot areas.

The area burned is just brush so thick you can't even hike through most of it. it will grow back just as thick in 3 years. Mostly buckbrush.

Supposed to go to Yosemite this weekend...well...guess not.

Per local news, the winds are blowing southeast, so it will follow hwy 49 towards Oakhurst, and not get into Yosemite. It also looked like they got the perimeter around Mariposa under control, as the fire is not bearing down on the town as it was last night per the pics they showed on local news.
Hope it stays that way, its a beautiful little mining town with lots of history. Its not looking good for all the houses and animals around the town though.

People were spray painting their address's on their livestock, in case they had to set them free to fend for themselves, and in hopes if they survived, they could be returned to their owners.

If we get another very wet winter, flooding and mudslides will be a huge concern.

Super-tough terrain, as you note. Steep small mountains
with a lot of winding canyons and not many access
roads. It'll be nasty ass firefighting on 49 between
Coulterville and Mariposa. Lots of rattlers in that
area, as well.

what a racket, this is no doubt another fire set by the fire industrila complex.. Its soooomcorrupt here, from calfires insane wasteful unlimited budget to all the contarctors who make millions in evry fire... for nny how we ALWAYS have fires every year... never used to be like that. But if you had 10 million in heavy equip ready to remt to californias fire industrial complex... how tempting would it be tomflick a match...

I used to go to Yosemite a lot for work, and would always take the 140 to get there from Fresno (can't stand the 41, the direct route from Fresno), through Mariposa. Some of the most treacherous terrain I have ever seen is along the 140 following the Merced river to Yosemite, which is just north of Mariposa. It used to scare the shit out me just driving through there, hoping I wouldn't get squashed by the rocks that fall on a regular basis through this valley (there is a huge landslide on 140 they haven't touched for years, they just re routed 140 around it) . If the fire gets in this area, all bets are off.

By the hotspot map in above post, it is spreading right for the area I mentioned by the Merced river (Briceberg, Midpines).

49,000 acres, 7% contained, 29 buildings fried. Mariposa has been saved, but its spreading into Cathy's Valley, where there are lots of homes. It could get over to Raymond, another small, historic mining town
