Containment estimates are always vastly underestimated in order to keep more fire resources flowing and of course ... more drama for everybody concerned. Spread today was minor compared to yesterday. |

From Williams peak look out (Old deserted look out which is now burned down) on Hunters Valley Mountain Access Rd you can see right where the fire must have started near rural homes, maybe some sort of spark from farmer rancher people. The good news is the areas burnt are all heavy buckbrush that will grow back in 3 years, unfortunately, it's thorny hard to hike through shit that is only value is to prevent erosion. The hot spot map shows advance towards Dogtown and Coulterville but not Mariposa, that southern edge looks like it is diverted to just growing towards Cathy Valley and lower elevation that doesn't even matter. A good thing is the rim fire from a few years back took out a lot of fuel around the 120 hwy which may keep it from spreading northward. Also the rough fire from last year above pine flat in Fresno county may help keep it from spreading south. If Shave Lake catches fire it is GONE. 90% of the pines in that area are dead from bark beatle. So previous forest fires may actually act as fire breaks and help this from spreading too far. |

The trees are 45% dead over here on the east side of sierras. we had a great winter snow pack. But. 5 Years of Drought before this winter has pretty much done its damage that can not be turned around. Until it burns to the ground.. sooner the better . And for heavens sake Mariposa the town about to get lit, is a fkn tinder box. They guy in the video that OP posted is true . That place needs to burn as well. I think they should have lit prescribed burns years ago. It all must burn and it will. Nothing can stop it . My town will burn as well , no one talks about it. But its plane to see. shits dead and dry and it will torch . Good night yall be safe |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73484212 If a forest has that amount of dead wood in it the IT WILL BURN. If not now, then later. In fact it NEEDS to burn so as to clean out all the deadwood and allow itself to start to regenerate. Fire is NATURAL in most forests and are part of the process of keeping a forest healthy. That was not understood years ago when they started the Smokey The Bear campaign all the way back in the 1920's or so. Today we "should" know better, particularly after the horrific Yellowstone fire from 20-25 years ago. With that fire they thought the forest and wildlife would be destroyed, instead the wildlife multiplied 10 fold and that forest, which was one of the first protected from forest fires - going all the way back to the 1800's when the US Army ran the place (NO National Park Service yet - the US Army saved it from the locals) showed just how important FIRE was to the overall eco system. California forests USED to burn regularly ... now with 80 year of fire suppression they are unhealthy in many respects. Allow the deadwood to be burned out, regularly, via small fires so huge fires don't have a chance to develop. (ditto the Rockies and other forested areas in the West) |
