Poles remember the brave patriots who were slaughtered as they revolted against Hitler's occupying Nazis 73 years on from Warsaw Uprising
Traffic came to a standstill as thousands of Poles remembered doomed Warsaw Uprising from August 1944
It was the largest act of resistance by any European nation occupied by the Nazis during Second World War
Most of the city was destroyed as a consequence, with about 200,000 people - mostly civilians - being killed
During his July visit, President Donald Trump paid tribute to the 'desperate struggle to overthrow oppression'

Good post. It is strange that even though the Nazis knew that Warsaw would be captured in a matter of months as the Red Army pushed them back, they still ordered the destruction of the city in retaliation for the uprising. On Hitler's orders they destroyed the city using men and explosives that were much needed in combat on the eastern front. They destroyed building including history buildings, libraries, schools, universities and churches. And as you mention many civilians were killed... and this was within a year of the end of the war. At this point there was no doubt Germany would lose the war.. and still Warsaw was intentionally destroyed.

August 1, 1944 - Warsaw Uprising

On the evening of 1 Aug 1944, shots rang out across the city of Warsaw as some 40,000 poorly armed citizen soldiers, mostly young people in the age of 20, including men and women, backed by almost the entire city population, attacked the well-equipped, well-fortified German garrison. The first European capital captured by Adolf Hitlerís armies was fighting back.

Fierce fighting broke out across the city by the late afternoon. Only 1 in 10 Polish fighters had a weapon, but many went into action hoping to use captured arms from the Germans, or from their own fallen comrades.

Hitlerís reaction was furious. He ordered the complete destruction of the city and death of all its inhabitants.

On 2 Oct, after 63 days of fighting, the defenders of Warsaw, abandoned by their allies and left to face the German army alone, capitulated.

On the Polish side 15,200 insurgents killed and missing, 5,000 wounded, 15,000 sent to POW camps. Among civilians 200,000 were dead, and approximately 700,000 expelled from the city.

Every year on August 1 Warsaw symbolically stands motionless for a minute to pay homage to the heroes who have sacrificed their lives in the name of humans' greatest value - freedom.
