It uses GPS only to correct the inertial navigation. if gps goes out it will continue on its path, but the error will start to build up over time. |

When US and Russia were conducting the first orbital space flights, how do you think they knew in advance where to put the recovery team? They calculated where the capsule will land. Yep. It's not that hard. ICBMs are called ballistic missiles because they fly along a ballistic trajectory. The entire trajectory including the impact point is determined by the boost phase and the firing of thrusters that align the MIRV platform (third stage) in the orbit before the warheads are sent down. CEP (circular error probable) of modern nukes is less than 100 meters. ICBMs do not need additional guidance. It's all calculated beforehand. What you, OP, are saying is like asking: how can North Korean artillery hit Seoul without GPS guided munitions? Just like artillery round trajectory, the missile trajectory can be calculated with high accuracy. |
