"NEW inventions," not incremental advances. Tesla conceived of and invented AC power in his head. That was a new invention but it was over a century ago. |

Actually we invent so many things, volume of stuff we know is growing exponentially. You could consider 3-d printing of usable parts (not just plastic models) to be a new invention. Or you could consider it just a step above CNC, which is a step above manual milling machines. Does it fundamentally change the way we do things, or just make it faster/cheaper/easier to make those parts? At its most basic level, a 3-d printer is a small scale version of making a structure out of bricks. By stacking layers of small things, a bigger, mode complex thing is created. No doubt someone 3000 years ago watched at a mud-dabbing wasp build a nest from mud, and thought "If we could train those bugs to make pottery, we would be rich, and if they would use bronze instead of mud, we would be richer". The idea is very old but only recently have we had the technology. |
