How is the internet and is it totally controlled? Is the media really free, what were the headlines? |

How long were you there and which cities/towns did you visit? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8177690 How unwilling to smile back they were, and able to go into deeper subjects quite quickly, and there is a poetic beauty of soul in them, somehow, and they ALL dress well. In the cities that I visited anyway, St.Petersburg and Moscow. The Moscovites were the more friendly. |

Love to hear your intellectual curiosity. :) Sounds like a great trip. Where all did you visit? |

Are the Richy Rich's who pay extra for a blue cop light in their car still allowed to bypass traffic and park wherever they damn well please? Don't think so, although we stayed in airbnb places. I was expecting more heavy officiousness than we got, though there certainly is a fair amount of it, crossing the border on a train to Finland, the Russian border security guy took ten minutes or so to scrutinize my friend's Australian passport, confer with a colleaque, and the Finn came in making a friendly joke, the difference was striking. I didn't see any of that blue light b/s either. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68493300 Anti-American - not in any obvious way, more like a pronounced confidence in their own culture, an unwillingness to speak English, even to cater to tourism with their signs on public transport being usually only in cryllic. To me it seemed they couldn't be bothered to speak of Obama or Trump, or even Putin, or maybe unwilling to talk politics with foreigners, I don't know. We mainly spoke to taxi-drivers, anyway. It really was great, thanks :) The highlights were the opera in St. Petersburg, a jazz bar called 'The Hat' the ballet in Moscow, cocktails at the Red Square, the Kremlin and the stupendously magnificent architecture, especially the churches. |

No there isn't, the amount of smiling most Westerners do is quite nauseating, especially if it's not genuine. Russians do smile, it's rarer, but twice as close. |
