OP, you're on top on this-I remember the Donald Cook. Then, soon after the USS Cook, a US carrier group was scared into UK waters (was it the Eisenhower?) by a Russian naval that was following it closely.

It might have hit so hard, it "bounced" back and then when it continued it's forward momentum, the McCain was further away. The ramming ship made a sharp left. Then stopped. Then left again, out of the shipping lanes.

These were shipping lanes, well travelled. I doubt the McCain was dead in the water. Unless, it was crippled/attacked just before them.

If that is true, there should have been some shear. Even a few inches. Look at the conical shape of the hole at the water line and the "Perfect" "V" where the ship hit it. There is no way that the McCain was under power. None !

I would be looking at the other ships in the area. Some observers would have disabled the ship and verified that it was disabled. The other ships in the area would have been the lookouts, not the ship that hit it.

paint from the tanker. It also occurs when one vehicle
rams into another, paint comes off onto the other vehicle.
