it's called "optimal manning" also known as undermanned vessel with long watches. the navy has been calling the DDG the work horse of the fleet for a reason... they work the shit out of them and the sailors. in for a few weeks out for a month... in for a week out for 3. now with longer sea rotations it's going to get worse. you can only get so much quality and quantity out of a human for so long before they need a recharge to maintain that standard. it's not just the watches... you have non stop drills at all hours, watches, and trouble calls for gear... when you underman techs the ones you do have get burnt out quick and make mistakes. makes sense they try and use any slow time they might get to doze off.... watch just happens to be the slow time ( as compared to hands in gear or running drills).

I have worked in the Combat Information Center of a ship for most of my naval career (I'm a veteran now), and I don't see how this has happened AGAIN. In CIC, my job and the job of everyone else in there is to watch HUGE screens depicting the radar/satellite placement of all merchant/friendly/foe vessels for MILES out. Unless, like Michael Trigboff said, the ship's sensory radars are being hacked/tricked, I do not see how this can have happened yet again. A sad and senseless tragedy.

Honestly? From an ex-sailor, the officer corps is staffed completely by old-boy know-nothing political flunkies. They're totally and utterly incompetent. It's alike a frat basically.

We need military reform so it's structured more on a merit basis, like IDF, PLA, or shit even the Red Army promoted competent people into officers.

The U.S. military? Either you went to the big frat "academies" or you're a peon, that's it.

An Aegis DDG has some of the most sophisticated radar and tracking systems in the world. This happening twice is indicative of a large hole in our fighting capability. I pray that all are safe.
