Russia is forward deploying 8 divisions for Zapad 17

These are heavy strike formations, intended for deep offensive operations. They are also just the first echelon forces. Follow-on formations would then move in from the Urals.

I'm not saying that Russia is planning to go on the attack. But they are clearly rehearsing an invasion of NATO border states.

This is all bound for the Western Strategic Direction. They could easily roll over the Baltics and penetrate Poland as far as the Vistula, possibly besieging Warsaw and Gdansk. If it actually comes to war, there will be other theaters of course.

The 8th Guards Army, the 58th Army, the 22nd Army Corp in Crimea and the DNR Corp and LNR Corp are all still available in the Southern Direction. They could sweep over southern Ukraine and threaten Romania.

The 2nd Guards Army, the 41st Army and the 5 western heavy divisions of the National Guard constitute the strategic reserve and possible occupation forces.

All up I estimate Russia can commit about 500,000 men to a war against NATO.

I could add that each of those Army groups has an Iskander brigade attached, and they will certainly have a role in Zapad 17, and a brigade may very well be flown into Kaliningrad for the exercise.

Each Iskander brigade has between 12-18 tactical nuclear warheads. So that is up to 72 tactical nuclear weapons available for a first strike against NATO forward positions.

This brings the total forces involved in Zapad 17 to 300,000 troops and 2,000 tanks, and suggests that simultaneous offensive operations against Ukraine and NATO are part of the Russian plan for General War in the Western Strategic Direction.
