Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
smile_hear

How do you discover your real purpose in life? I’m not talking about your job, your daily responsibilities, or even your long-term goals. I mean the real reason why you’re here at all — the very reason you exist.

Here’s a story about Bruce Lee which sets the stage for this little exercise. A master martial artist asked Bruce to teach him everything Bruce knew about martial arts. Bruce held up two cups, both filled with liquid. “The first cup,” said Bruce, “represents all of your knowledge about martial arts. The second cup represents all of my knowledge about martial arts. If you want to fill your cup with my knowledge, you must first empty your cup of your knowledge.”

If you want to discover your true purpose in life, you must first empty your mind of all the false purposes you’ve been taught (including the idea that you may have no purpose at all).

So how to discover your purpose in life? While there are many ways to do this, some of them fairly involved, here is one of the simplest that anyone can do. The more open you are to this process, and the more you expect it to work, the faster it will work for you. But not being open to it or having doubts about it or thinking it’s an entirely idiotic and meaningless waste of time won’t prevent it from working as long as you stick with it — again, it will just take longer to converge.

HERE'S WHAT TO DO:

1. Take out a blank sheet of paper or open up a word processor where you can type (I prefer the latter because it’s faster).

2. Write at the top, “What is my true purpose in life?”

3. Write an answer (any answer) that pops into your head. It doesn’t have to be a complete sentence. A short phrase is fine.

4. Repeat step 3 until you write the answer that makes you cry. This is your purpose.

That’s it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a counselor or an engineer or a bodybuilder. To some people this exercise will make perfect sense. To others it will seem utterly stupid. Usually it takes 15-20 minutes to clear your head of all the clutter and the social conditioning about what you think your purpose in life is. The false answers will come from your mind and your memories. But when the true answer finally arrives, it will feel like it’s coming to you from a different source entirely.

There is more to the article but I didn't want to paste the entire thing here...enjoy...

Thanks, I'm really interested to see if any one has any luck with this method...if anything it will make you take a good look inside.

This seems like a really interesting exercise. Somehow, I think it might actually work. I will give this a try and get back to you. Did it work for you?

Yes, it took me a little longer than that but I found when you kind of write automatically like that you see a lot of garbage come out in the process and when I was done....wow, I felt as if I had just went through years of therapy...I was able to recognize some truths which I had denied for so long and really think now I know my purpose here...good luck with it, I hope you get the same result.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
My purpose in life is to make people feel better about themselves. It happens in a way, like I'm hanging, crucified on a cross, and they realize they are better off
than me, and feel better about themselves.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
This is going pretty well. I have filled a page of lined paper. Mostly the purposes are things I feel I have already accomplished. Like being a good Mom, daughter, sister etc. I have no regrets in those areas. (so far) my problem is that I have not written anything that speaks loud enough to move me to tears yet.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
Sounds like basic self evaluation and I agree it is a good idea.

I think though that your answers would probably change throughout the course of your life.

The downside of self evaluation is that when you remember or feel things that upset you it is very easy to stop there and focus on that pain. I think writing it all down would be better, simply because you can return to it, reread it and complete it when you are able.

I will be trying this method soon. ;)

Dingo. Its certainly a worthwhile exercise. You're right about the parts that hurt in the self evaluation process. Those are the things hardest to write but most satisfactory if you have crossed them off the list.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
Flatbed, just a suggestion that may help.

Turn your focus more inward. Try not to think about the things you want to DO, like being a good mum, good friend etc etc, those are great things don't get me wrong, but they involve someone else. This is about YOU, and your purpose. What YOU are here to learn about yourself.

For example, for myself, what I've found is the thing that brings me to tears is needing to learn more self confidence, self esteem, learning to like and accept WHO I am regardless of what others think.

Does that make sense? It's more personal, more "inside" that you're looking for in this kind of exercise.

You'll know it when you find it. Biggest clue is it will be something you've struggled with all your life.

Why is everyone else crying?
All events are empty by virtue of their empty essence;
All events are immaculately pure in their origin;
All events are all-embracing clear light;
All events transcend suffering spontaneously;
All events are manifestly perfect Buddhahood.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
That makes no sense..the only thing i can think of to bring me to tears would be my chlldren or husband dying or a member of my family..so my children dying is the purpose of my life?

MY lifes purpose is whatever i choose it to be. My lifes mission is the mission i give to myself. There is no blackboard in the sky written by god with my life's purpose on it. We are free to create whatever life we want for ourself.

Re: Discover your LIFE PURPOSE in 20 minutes
My belief is we all are brought back from a former life time to improve ourselves in this lifetime. If you fail, you just come on back again. This explains best why the evil people are still with us, darn, they keep coming back and do not correct their evil ways.
