UPDATE! Mandatory evacuations: parts of TAMPA! all of Miami Beach! ALL coastal cities, South Florida! also some cities south of Lake Okeechobee!!
UPDATE!! Saturday, Sept 9th!!

- Hillsborough County , and Tampa are ordering all residents in Zone A to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Irma. All special needs and mobile home residents should also evacuate.

To view evacuation zones by address, use the interactive map here.

Residents can confirm evacuation zones and register for HCFL Alert, Hillsborough County's official public notification system, at HCFLGov.net/StaySafe or by calling (813) 272-5900.

Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) will run evacuation routes only on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visit Gohart.org for additional information.
==========

Florida officials want residents to evacuate the area directly south of Lake Okeechobee as Hurricane Irma approaches.

Gov. Rick Scott released a statement Thursday ordering an immediate voluntary evacuation for cities surrounding the southern half of the lake from Lake Port to Canal Point in Hendry, Palm Beach and Glades counties.

Mandatory evacuations will be put in place beginning Friday morning.

"This decision was made due to our sole focus on life safety as Hurricane Irma approaches Florida," Scott said Friday at a news conference in West Palm Beach.

Scott made the decision after discussing the Herbert Hoover Dike with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Col. Jason Kirk told Scott the structural integrity of the dike would not be compromised, but excessive wind could push some water over the dike.

The seven cities affected by the order are Belle Glade, Canal Point, Clewiston, Lake Harbor, Moore Haven, Pahokee and South Bay.

Scott said Floridians should pay attention to the storm surge forecast, as it's projected to be between 3 to 10 feet in some areas.

"The majority of Florida will have major hurricane impacts, with deadly storm surge and life-threatening winds," Scott said. "I will expect this along the entire east coast and the entire west coast."

The governor said the Florida Keys will start feeling the effects of the storm Saturday morning.

A swath of South Florida remained under mandatory evacuations, including coastal communities in Miami and Palm Beach.

In addition, Gov. Rick Scott said Friday morning that evacuation is mandatory for those living in cities south of Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in the state.

"This decision was made due to our sole focus on life safety as Hurricane Irma approaches Florida," Scott said.

With long lines at gas stations and highways clogged, emergency officials advised people not to travel far, but locate local shelters that are safely away from storm surges.

"I can guarantee you that I don't know anybody in Florida that's ever experienced what's about to hit South Florida," Brock Long, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said at a news conference Friday morning. "They need to get out and listen and heed the warnings."

Hurricane warnings were issued Thursday night from Jupiter Inlet south around the Florida peninsula to Bonita Beach, as well as for the Florida Keys, Lake Okeechobee and Florida Bay.

Miami Beach was virtually deserted Friday morning, Mayor Philip Levine told TODAY. He said the city used buses and trolleys to help move people, including senior and homeless populations.

"These shelters should be the refuge of last resort for people who truly have no place to go," Gimenez stressed. "We encourage everyone to provide assistance to family, coworkers, friends who are in the evacuation zone."

Communities affected by the mandatory evacuation order include:

Bal Harbour
Bay Harbor Islands
Biscayne Park
Golden Beach
Indian Creek Village
Miami Beach
North Bay Village
Sunny Isles Beach
Surfside
Key Biscayne

The four shelters that opened on Wednesday are North Miami Beach Senior High School, South Miami Senior High School, Felix Varela Senior High School and E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion, which is a pet-friendly shelter.

Gimenez said that four more shelters would open on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

Official evacuation notice:

Message from the City of Miami Beach Regarding Mandatory Evacuation Order:

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Miami-Dade County has issued a mandatory evacuation order for Miami Beach beginning at noon tomorrow. Miami Beach businesses and residents should evacuate to a relative or friends' home at a safer location. For those unable to make necessary accommodations, a list of open shelter locations can be found here.

Hurricane Irma remains a powerful category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds of over 185 miles per hour. It is one of the strongest and largest storms ever reported in the Atlantic Ocean. South Florida remains in the forecast track for either a direct hit or major storm impacts. Do not take this lightly. Plan now to keep yourself and your family safe.

=======
from CBS News:

Wednesday evening, the county issued a mandatory evacuation order for Zones A and B – the two closest to the coast. The order goes into effective at 7 a.m. Thursday.

“If you do not heed the warning and you do not heed the mandatory evacuation order and you have a problem, I’m not saying we can’t get to you, I’m saying we may not be able to get to you, so that’s the risk you are taking,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said.

Zone A includes most of Coastal Miami-Dade including Key Biscayne, while Zone B includes Miami Beach, Miami’s Brickell Avenue neighborhood, more inland areas and other oceanfront cities. Click here for a map of evacuation zones.

For optimum safety, those in Miami Beach are urged to evacuate using the most direct route to their destination, which include: A1A Northbound/Collins Avenue, 41 Street to Julia Tuttle Causeway and 5 Street to MacArthur Causeway westbound.

All city garages are now open for residents to park free of cost, with the exception of the City Hall garage.

The county is opening four shelters, one of which is pet-friendly. Click here for a full list of shelters.

“The storm continues to be a threat to Miami-Dade County,” said Gimenez. “Miami-Dade County has begun evacuating 2,200 special needs residents.”

Gimenez told residents that shelters should be a last resort due to limits in capacity.

Confirmed. I have back-chatter intel. It will turn NW back into the ocean before every touching the us. However, announcing this new would cause media outlets a huge dip in ratings; therefore, they are continuing the charade. The government is encouraging it as a "Social experiment"

Am I crazy for wishing I was where all the action is?
I want to experience a hurricane.
I want a few days off from work and responsibilities.
But I wouldn't want all my stuff destroyed.

I have a friend who moved to the coast of Florida last year.
I told her she was crazy for moving down there and what is she gonna do when a hurricane hits?
Guess she's finding out now...

In the same boat. We are in St. Louis, but my SIL moved down to Miami, and we are trying to get her to fly out and come back here for the weekend.

But she's optimistic. She has a few 2-liters and a bottle of Tequila, so she thinks she'll be fine, at her friends house, which is a concrete block new house.

I told her to make sure she gets a sharpie and puts her name/SSN on her extremities, so when they need to identify her body, it will make it easier on the recovery teams.

I don't even give a shit that this was a harsh comment. This shit is serious. Dead serious. And she has a condo right on the beach, with no hurricane shutters or windows. So she taped her windows and then the blinds together.

My God, some people can't see their nose on their faces. You don't fuck around with a Cat 5. Her sister, my other SIL, went through several when she lived there, and is telling her that this isn't a game, to GTFO, but she's all, "Lalalalaa, it's gonna be a hurricane party!".

I really don't want to fly down to bury her. :(

Of course I'm concerned about the people but I'm also fearful for pets, livestock and wildlife. I'm sure there's idiots who'll leave their dogs chained up in the yard.

Hopefully instinct will lead wildlife out of the area before it really hits.
