One deep cycle battery doesn't last long. And damage occurs after going below 50% charge. I have my solar panels connected to the best charge controller you can get (Midnight Classic), and I have 4 high quality (US battery) 12 volt deep cycle batteries. It doesn't last as long as you might think. The problem is the 123 volt system. There is a lot of loss going from 12 volt to 120 in the inverter. The loss is nearly 10:1 (12x10=120 volts).

That being said, I can run my freezer, fridge and some lights and have several plugs in my house wired to the inverter. As long as the sun shines I'm OK, and even then I have to use aggressive power management.

A better solution for lights are rechargeable LED camp lanterns that you charge off your inverter.

I knew a guy that had more panels than me and 16 deep cycle batteries. Even with the sun out, his battery bank was dead in a few days. His mistake was wiring the inverter through his panel to power the entire house (except air conditioning)

But, keep up the good work. You're a long ways ahead of most. You're thinking.

I question some of the consumption numbers though. For example I have a large mini fridge that has a surge to 150 watts for a second starting the compressor then runs at about 75 watts, same with my 5,000 Btu window A/C. My 19" LED TV takes 27 watts.

I am using Bosch solar panels on my roof and set the system up myself. One of these is critical to measure each appliance for consumption. After doing that you can plug it into your inverter so you know exactly what you have used, subtract +/- 10% for the inverter's efficiency rate of +/- 10%.

Those consumption numbers are averaged, with a bunch of different factors pending! But it's a good start to base what you're looking to get out of the machine. And having it portable is the most convenient system I've ever used. Thanks for sharing!

tell me, if you may know, would using a magnifying glass produce more intense light and therefor more energy if u placed it between the sun and solar panel..i dont really know anything bout it just curious why they dont do this, is there some known reason?

This actually got me thinking for a while but after some thought I figured it might mean less power because the amount of sunlight hitting the solar panel would be the same either way. All the magnifying glass would do is concentrate it to a smaller area meaning less sun on other areas.
It might work out less because id assume theres only so much power a solar panel could absorb.
Any way,, I could be wrong but this is my thinking.

Some have done that. They train mirrors on the solar panels, which increases their output. One guy I saw even hooked his mirrors to a sun tracking system so that the mirror tracked the sun and reflected on the panels all day with no further input from him.

The thing you have to watch for is that, ironically, the hotter solar panels get, the less they produce. In the heat of a Texas summer, mine drop by 30% at least.

I came up with this a few months ago and just started putting mine back together. I have already tested all of the components and wiring to make sure it's worth mounting everything on the cart and it all works great! I am now in the process of painting mine after I welded the custom panel stand to make sure it's extra secure.


Pull around wherever the sun is, even adjust the tilt of the panel when the sun isn't where you need it to be! When you're done, just wheel it inside, pull the sides of the cart down and easily access the outlet!

Instead of having to go through the hassle of building a breaker panel and connecting to the electrical grids, this mobile solar system fits through doorways so when you're done charging it outside, just bring it inside and hook up directly to it!

Lights, phone charger, tv, game console, stereo, mini fridge, anythjng you can think of within reasonable size! More numbers and information are included in the pictures above

I came up with these blueprints a couple months ago and now that I have purchased everything, I set up two panels that are paralleled together for more power with the same adjustable arm panel, just on the other bar closest to the handle. I also bought 2 of the 110ah batteries that I also paralleled for more battery life. Upgrades that can be done later.

I made a cart made out of some metal I welded and some wheelchair parts that has two deep cycle batteries with the backrest replaced with an acrylic panel that holds the inverter and some outlets. I used a winch quick connect for power to the batteries.

I replaced the ends of some super heavy jumper cables with winch quick connects that can hook to the charge controller or a battery charger.

With those super big wheelchair tires it's super easy to move, even up stairs, and I can lock them with the wheelchair brakes.

That would be a priceless post catastrophe prep for when lights are out.
