Could there be a compromise and do maybe one wall red? Maybe a door black? A red and black room could actually be pulled off attractively, but it would be rather sophisticated and would require decor that a 12-year old isn't going to have (obviously).

You have to start asking questions. Why red and black. Is it for a sports team or a video game or maybe something else that you'd really want to know about.

This is a very crucial time for boys. You want them to keep talking and sharing not to shut down. A flat no is not such a great way to treat a male of that age.

Maybe build him a loft bed with a social area underneath? Maybe paint the bed either the red or the black and maybe black and red stripes on one wall with a blue or white stripe?

This is a time for everyone to get creative and to COMPROMISE. He's getting older and he's trying to see how much respect his parents have for him and his opinion. A flat "no" speaks volumes and sets everything going in the wrong direction.
