Russian general accuses Israel of knowing passenger plane schedule during Syria attack

The Israeli Air Force’s tactic of hiding behind unarmed and civilian aircraft to try to prevent the Syrian military from staging an effective air defence has become all too common, Lieut. Gen. Valery Gorbenko, former commander of the Russian Air Force’s 4th Air and Air Defence Army, has said.

Earlier, in a statement regarding the Thursday morning missile strikes targeting military facilities in Damascus and Syria’s southwest, Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov provided new details about the attacks, confirming that they were carried out by four Israeli Air Force F-16s.

According to Konashenkov, at the time of the Israeli assault, a Cham Wings Airbus A320 with 172 passengers on board was on approach to land at the Damascus International Airport, and had to be diverted to prevent a possible accidental shootdown by Syrian air defences.

Konashenkov stressed that only the quick-thinking of air traffic controllers and the effective functioning of Syria’s automated air traffic control system ensured that the civilian aircraft was able to safely turn around and land at the nearest standby airport, which happened to be the Hmeymim Airbase in Latakia.

“The Israeli military has adopted the tactic of hiding behind unarmed aircraft, including civilian airliners,” Lt. Gen. Gorbenko lamented. “This tactic makes attacks against Syrian targets safe for the Israeli Air Force, since it severely restricts the actions of Syrian air defences afraid of shooting down a passenger plane by mistake. But the moral aspect of the use of such tactics is questionable,” he added.

According to Gorbenko, the fact that Israel chose to time its attack on Damascus with the approach of a passenger plane toward the Syrian capital was almost certainly not a coincidence. “It’s likely that the Israelis knew the timetable and schedule of regular flights in the region, and could have postponed the strikes” if they wanted to, he noted.

On February 5, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened that the Turkish Army will carry out a full-scale military action against Syria if it does not withraw its forces from the areas cleared from terrorists in southern Idlib.

Units of Syrian government forces, led by the Tiger Forces, are rapidly advancing along the M5 highway in the direction of the militant-held  town of Al-Eis in southwestern Aleppo. Over the past day, government forces have liberated over 10 settlements and deployed in a striking distance from al-Eis itself.

Al-Eis is the stronghold of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and other terrorist groups. A Turkish observation post is also located there. The post has been established to monitor the ceasefire regime established by the Astana agreements. Nonetheless, it seems that terrorists, officially excluded from the ceasefire, tricked the Turkish Army and  drew them into a trap. So, now the Turkish observation post is located a step away from al-Qaeda positions.

Russia to propose Turkey a new Sochi agreement A Russian delegation is expected to propose to Turkey on Saturday a new version of a 2018 deal made between two countries to deescalate the situation in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, Asharq Al-Awsat said. 

The updated version of the Sochi agreement stipulates a ceasefire between the regime and opposition factions in Idlib and includes the drawing of new lines in the area and the separation of moderate factions from the extremists in northwestern Syria, Asharq Al-Awsat said without mentioning its sources.

“We have an important deal with our partners, the Turks, to clearly set the system in the deescalation zone in Idlib,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Friday that a Russian delegation was expected to arrive in Turkey on Saturday to discuss the situation in Idlib, where seven Turkish soldiers and one Turkish contractor was killed by the Syrian government’s shelling on Monday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused Syrian President Bashar Assad’s ally Russia of not honouring the 2018 deal, which aimed at establishing a demilitarised zone in Idlib, the last major-rebel held enclave in Syria. 

Turkey promised to drive off jihadi groups in the province as a part of the deal, but Russia-backed Syrian forces launched an offensive on Idlib in April, as extremist fighters expanded territories under their control. 

“Unfortunately, terrorists still control the situation in the Idlib area. At the end, we should implement this pledge,” Lavrov said.

Turkey threatens to intervene in Idlib, if Russia fails to ensure the withdrawal of Syrian troops from areas where Turkey has 12 observation posts built under the Sochi agreement. 

Turkey, which hosts 3.6 million Syrian refugees, cannot tolerate a new refugee influx from Idlib, which is home to some 3 million people, Erdoğan said this week.
