Stan Van Gundy, head coach of the Detroit Pistons, Calls National Anthem Racist, Calls Protesting Athletes ‘Brave Patriots’
Even as the NFL suffers a backlash for allowing (and encouraging) its athletes to protest the National Anthem, one NBA coach is voicing his support for them, calling them “brave and patriotic athletes.”

The NBA does not allow athletes to stage protests or political statements on the court – during the National Anthem or any other time. However, as the season got underway, several anthem singers took a knee as they sang, causing outrage among many. NBA athletes including Lebron James and Stephen Curry have voiced their support of anthem protesters in the NFL and criticized President Trump’s condemnation of those athletes.

Stan Van Gundy, head coach of the Detroit Pistons, is speaking out on the controversy, and his comments are likely to spark additional outrage among many.

Van Gundy said “The Star Spangled Banner” contains racist verses, and then defended the athletes participating in the protests as “patriots.”

In a new essay for Time Magazine, Van Gundy justified the protests by saying they are necessary to affect change, and insists they are not disrespectful to the troops or the flag.

In a time where bigotry seems on the rise and commitment to racial equality on the decline, I have an obligation as a citizen to speak out and to support, in any way possible, those brave and patriotic athletes who are working to bring change to our country. I believe all of us do.

Honoring America has to mean much, much more than standing at attention for a song (one which, by the way, contains racist language in later verses).

Protest has nearly always been the catalyst for meaningful change. And it has always made people uncomfortable. This was true of the abolitionists, the women’s suffrage movement, the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement, all of which shined a bright and needed light on injustice, demanded that our country live up to its stated ideals and produced our most meaningful change.

Colin Kaepernick has been denied employment for the act of taking a knee to draw attention to the issue of police killings of men of color. Tommie Smith and John Carlos were denied employment and advancement in their post-athletic careers because they raised a fist on the victory stand at the 1968 Olympics. These athletes and many others are risking future contracts and endorsement opportunities to speak out on issues of racial injustice because they feel duty-bound to do so. These are patriots of the highest order.

ok "Stan" have always supported the Pistons as a lifetime Michigander but I haven't watched the NBA in years. I can easily cut out any NBA related gear, causes, tv ratings or anything the Pistons do locally.

If you want war libtard because you want to think politics or social justice is your job and NOT coaching GAME, then fuk ya' - I will completely abandon and boycott the team and NBA. not a problem. ZERO FUX given.

Bigotry is not on the rise. I don't know what universe these fucks live in. Things are better for blacks now more than ever. Did we not have a black president for 8 fucking years? What kind of mental malfunction are these people suffering from? It's more than liberalism. They cannot or will not see reality.

The racist verse was removed a long time ago, it is no longer racist and we aren't going to replace it now.

The (Lefty) ones above a 50 or 60 IQ probably know it isn't really about racism or bigotry.

They use that "bigotry" angle simply because they think it may gain traction with the low fruits. Because of their prior indoctrination.

Using fake news (bigotry!!! and racism!!!) as the pretext for political change (aka power-grab) via psyop-conditioning of the masses.

Unfortunately for them, the average-and-above-discernment kids see right thru all this humorous scam...

It's not even necessarily (or at all) racial matters, legitimate or phony, that's fueling the opinions of most of the shitheads out there sympathizing with the Colin Kaepernicks of America. It's their libtardism.

Plenty of white leftists also sympathize with the anti-anthem protests, including the NFL's own commissioner and the limousine-liberal owner of the 49ers.

Many of these same wealthy fools were among the elite who endorsed and voted for Hillary last November.

Trump missed a big opportunity a few months ago to frame the reality of the situation when his speech about the protests in the NFL contained the words "son of a bitch" instead of "champagne socialist."
