Network Adminstrators-I can't use my VPN on the free company wifi..why not?
I use a VPN on my android phone and laptop all the time, except at work. For some reason none of my devices are able to connect when I'm running my VPN at work. I've also encountered this problem at a few other places that offer free wifi. My questions are:

1. Is there a simple work around to skirt their efforts?
2. Why would they not want a VPN being used on their wifi?

VPN's are supposed to be good, right?

Your VPN likely has numerous servers to choose from. Keep trying new servers until one works. They probably blocked the most popular ones but not all.

They may be offering free wifi so they can see all of your usage, where you go, etc, to profile you. Allowing VPN would negate their efforts.

Use openvpn on port 443 as they block all tcp ports except 80 and 443. You can probabaly also just use udp based openvpn but you would just have to test it.

There is probably a captive portal page setup that you need to click through without the VPN first. Ex. McDonald's free WiFi requires that you agree to terms and conditions etc before you can truly get out to the web.

Connect to the free WiFi. Shutdown the VPN.

Close all browser Windows, then reopen your favorite browser, still with VPN off. You hopefully will land at the captive portal\terms agreement page, if not try going to a website like glp or Google to initiate the captive portal.

Once you agree, the router running the free network will add your device to the approved list.

You should then be able to get onto the VPN.
