Best go join an actual star party yourself, and witness the telescopes tracking effortlessly. I can run Stellarium and see the sun set out my window and see the 15 minute discrepancy. And joining a star party to see for one's self. get out there and do with work.. and to get tilt changes from day to day you have to be in exactly the same spot... you cannot move around.. move 10 feet and the sun will appear in a different spot from your perspective . Anonymous Coward User ID: 70434452 United States 12/03/2017 01:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sunrise and sunset. For computational purposes, sunrise or sunset is defined to occur when the geometric zenith distance of center of the Sun is 90.8333 degrees. That is, the center of the Sun is geometrically 50 arcminutes below a horizontal plane. For an observer at sea level with a level, unobstructed horizon, under average atmospheric conditions, the upper limb of the Sun will then appear to be tangent to the horizon. The 50-arcminute geometric depression of the Sun's center used for the computations is obtained by adding the average apparent radius of the Sun (16 arcminutes) to the average amount of atmospheric refraction at the horizon (34 arcminutes). When you doofuses who believe sunrise/sunset varies from printed tables: Use this information to make the calculations from your locations. I have no trouble seeing the sun set without a telescope. Incidentally, I can see the sunrise with my naked eyes as well. So can anyone else reading this. Quoting: ArchimedesGirl Sure you can see the Sun. But you aren't *measuring* it. If the Sun were an *amazing* 12 or 13 minutes off, every telescope would be 12 or 13 arc-minutes off in targeting anything in the heavens. That's a ridiculously huge margin. And no telescope, anywhere, has a mechanism that could adapt to such a change. Since that demonstrably hasn't happened (telescopes continue to track the heavens just fine, thank you), I am thinking that you are somehow mistaken in your eyeballing it. Since we see no other consequences arising from such a massive change, it is tantamount to proof that no such change has occurred. As an aside, please note the zillions of posts here on GLP, going back *years* and always near a solstice, about the Sun supposedly being out of place. Yet Stonehenge still lines up. Yet, you can still get an accurate latitude from sextants. Yet Eclipses and transits occur as predicted decades and centuries ago. And yet, GOTO telescopes can accurately track the heavens. QED. |
