What is LHC?

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator under development by CERN, the world's largest organization devoted to particle physics. A particle accelerator, sometimes called an "atom smasher" by lay people, is a device that propels subatomic particles called hadrons at high speeds.

Symposium 25 Years of LHC Experimental Programme
Friday 15 Dec 2017, 11:00 → 16:10 Europe/Zurich
500-1-001 - Main Auditorium (CERN)

Description

25 years have passed since the March 1992 Evian meeting, where the LHC experimental programme was launched. The Evian meeting constitutes a crucial milestone in the design and development of the LHC experiments. Detector ideas discussed at Evian evolved into Letters of Intent that were submitted between 1992 and 1995, and subsequently led to the construction of today’s highly successful LHC experiments.

The symposium will cover the history of the LHC experimental programme, the physics landscape, the development of new concepts and technologies, and the bold decisions that had to be taken in the realisation of the experiments.

The symposium will end with a jamboree reviewing recent experimental results from the LHC.

Cryogenics is the branch of physics that deals with the production and effects of very low temperatures. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest cryogenic system in the world and one of the coldest places in the Universe.

The video shows a new cryostat installed at CERN, being used to test magnets for the upgrade of the LHC (the High-Luminosity LHC).
