I live in El Dorado County, (near Sacramento), and started the process about 6 months ago. The Sheriff in this county is awesome, very friendly and personally caries a small copy of the constitution in his pocket every day. He's a "Shall Issue" Sheriff. Unless you have a crappy background check, saying that you want a CCW for "self defense" is good enough for him. You can have as many guns on your permit...and I mean some people have over a dozen guns listed.

He's one of the Sheriffs that sent a letter to the prior administration indicating that he will not enforce some of the proposed anti 2A laws.

Also the Sherriff in my county will not be complying with CA new sanctuary State bill that was signed by Moonbeam.

I just hear so much crap about California....most of it I agree with, but there are areas that are very conservative still.

Another thing that surprised me is that there are a lot of people relocating from the Bay Area to El Dorado County wanting to get their CCW. Some CA folks are waking up and fighting back.
flag waver This is one of my CCW's.

Thanks OP.

Do you know if this sheriff will issue a permit to residents from Oregon?

I would love to obtain a California CCW.

Thanks

I believe as long as you are a dual resident in CA as well he will
Not sure about out of state CCW here though.....typically CA is nearly impossible to get a CCW, but in El Dorado county we have a great patriot of a sheriff that believes in people's rights!

I don't think so. You have to be a permanent resident of California and live in El Dorado County to be under the domain of this particular Sheriff. I think that if there was a legal structure that would allow him to do so he would. I had a full CA DOJ background check, fingerprints and a hour long meeting with a detective before I was recommended for my CCW permit.

I wish you could get your CCW here as I think we need more good guys that carry.

I'm part of a service club in El Dorado Hills and I donated 2 event tickets for the Sheriff and his wife. He came and sat at my table so I had some time to get to know him. He's the kind of man that i would hold the line for.

You may be right,...I'm not sure. I'll look into it.

This is the only thing I could find right now but it doesn't address dual residency.

"Must be at least 21 years of age.
Be a resident of the county you are applying through.
Pass the criminal/mental background check.
Not use or be addicted to any illegal drug.
Complete the required firearms training course.
Have a statement of “good cause” which is the reason you want or need a concealed weapons permit. In these 5 counties, “PERSONAL PROTECTION” is sufficient cause."

Congrats! Be wise and train, train, train...

I have a home in Tahoe and know that you'll be carrying in a variety of climates. Warm summer days to snowy winter nights. You need to build your muscle memory to deal with the variety of layers you may have, and the different environments you'll be in. Also, (I'm not sure it's applicable or not) make sure you discuss various scenarios and or situations with your family, (Spouse and kids), so they know how to act if you ever find yourself in a situation where you may need your weapon for defense.

I think the Glock is a good choice, But I prefer my rounds to pack just a tad more punch that a 9mm. (I carry either a Glock 22 or Wilson Combat Elite Professional daily)

I've had several Glocks over the years and find them to be a perfect answer to a very low maintenance high function weapon.

Be safe!

I like revolvers more and more for carry.

I just picture the scenario where some goblin jumps me, and I am grappling with the guy on the ground. He outweighs me by 100 lbs, and is about to bash my head into the pavement, I manage to pull my pistol out and shove it in his belly, pull the trigger, and it goes 'click' because the slide is pushed out of battery.

Good advice Travis. I have a sub compact Sig 229 in 40 but it tends to be a little trickier to carry unless I go with the shoulder holster setup. I carry the RIP 9mm ammo with the Shield to offset the lack of stopping power that the 40 has in comparison.

This too is a valid concern. I've always loved my trusty S&W 686... Damn indestructible and extremely reliable. Shit, you could have mold and spiders growin n the thing and it's still going to function. (I know... kind of an embellishment but, you get the drift)

For people who don't train often and are looking for a self defense weapon, I often recommend a revolver. (No safety to deal with, functions pretty much in any condition, barring the hammer doesn't pinch a piece of clothes or something on the way down, the thing is going to work for you). One option is to get a hammerless revolver

My buddy carries one every day and it's extremely concealable.

IMHO stay AWAY from shoulder holsters. They have their place in the market and yes, I do have a couple from many years ago but there are TOO MANY drawbacks to shoulder holsters for me to even consider them anymore.

First and foremost is;

Take Evil Twin's scenario for example. The wrestling match with Mr. Big. Now, your shoulder holstered weapon is going to be flopping around, (Even if tethered at the belt) quite a bit. It'll be difficult to grab instinctively, even if it's only out of place by a couple of inches or so. You may even have to avert your eyes from the fight for a second to orient yourself to the current position of the holster. However, it will be PLAINLY visible to your assailant and, as a matter of fact, in ONE snap, he will most likely have the weapon in his dominant hand, in a perfect grip, and it's automatically pointing at YOU!
Even if he fires by mistake, He's bound to score a hit in your torso.

Contrast that with a belt holster, perhaps with built in weapon retention such as the Blackhawk Serpa holsters...

The weapon stays in place. The assailant has to know enough to disengage the weapon retention button and, most likely, if he gets the weapon out, he'll do so with his left hand rather than right and will at least have to take the time to turn the weapon toward you. This gives you time to fight back.

Take it from a person who has been a trainer and instructor for over 20 years... You want every bit of luck and chance on your side.

Just my two cents.
