Lions, Tigers and BEARS Oh MY...Fires, Train Wrecks and STORMS Xmas Week...Holiday depression & A Hero's Journey. Vids
EDITED: 12-21-2017 UPDATE

This is a LONG READ...but worth it if you suffer
as I do from "Holiday Depression."..And our current NEWS
is not helping. If you--or someone you know--seems to have
this seasonal mood-swing, please watch the videos I've
included. I've found some relief from these insights and
hope it helps those who are uncomfortable during the Holidays.
(You don't need to respond...just take what you find and pass it on if it is helpful.) hf

Thread: A Christmas Prayer...

My theme for this thread is an idea I had while considering
the reality that at least some of the people experiencing the
"SUDDEN DISASTERS" (both natural and man-made this past
week
that include fires, quakes, storms and the latest
train derailment near Seattle) will walk away from the
experience this Christmas week with a "crisis of faith"
and at the least...HOLIDAY PTSD. Indeed, with emotional baggage, one doesn't
even NEED to have external disasters around the Holidays for
residue from the past, isolation and disappointment bring
us to a feeling of dread. What can we do?

My own experience with HOLIDAY PTSD centered around the eruption
of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 (when myself and my family
suffered great physical and financial loss) that still seems
like "emotional baggage" for us even decades later. I
came across a REMINDER (thanks to the thread link I post
in the intro paragraph below) that if we "frame" our
personal crisis in certain ways (like the "Hero's Journey"
as Joseph Campbell explains it) or understanding "The Power
of NOW" (as author Eckhart Tolle explains it)...we may be
able to find some resolution that has eluded us for years.
If this is something you're facing this Holiday--maybe
these suggestions will aide your efforts to resolve YOUR OWN
or a loved one's distress at this year's holiday season.
(And, of course, remember to stay in Prayer.)

Have a very Merry Christmas and wonderful new year!

Seems like there have been more than the average # of "disasters"
the past few weeks
...take just this week alone. The Train derailment
in Washington...continuing insane wild fires in CA...the big
quakes world-wide taking lives and property in only a moment's time.

In today's news (12-18-2017)

Watching these tragic events on the news from the comfort of
our home with family and friends around us can never really
put us in their "shoes."
Living within miles of "Ground Zero" during
the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption ...brought home for me how SUDDEN
can be natural (or human-caused) disasters bringing the terror of looking
"into the Abyss of Disaster" right in your face
. The experience was truly
life changing. I can look back many years later, though, and
realize I'd been living with a false sense of security--and
that my personal walk in my faith was very shallow for the
challenges what I would face in my life.

FireShoes

I Remember when looking at distant disasters...to check my shoes.

So...how do we process all this when we are personally
involved with these kinds of events? For me when reflecting on
markers in my own life that were life-altering-- I feel
as if they were "fated." But even though "fated" I still
had the thought I'd been "singled out" somehow. Like the
old chime you hear in your minds-eye: "Why ME, Lord?"

But is there another way to process sudden disaster or major loss in our personal life?

I can just imagine how having these experiences folks in
WA...GA...CA are facing right now. Some might frame them
like a "test" for other people part of one's Karma. Of course,
it is assumed that time in prayer and meditation will help
us the most, but can we go even further to escape the
baggage such trauma can carry over? It pained my heart to
think someone walking away from these disasters this week
might have a crisis of faith (like I went through in 1980)
that might be far-reaching...maybe even requiring therapy.

I had just had this thought about my own brush with 1980 disaster
--the St. Helens eruption--and how it would have been nice to hav
had therapy for my PTSD...when scrolling down the Forum Board list
I saw this thread that made me laugh out loud.
Thread: I’m so pissed about Star Wars I need therapy

It hits me like a ton of bricks: STAR WARS is the CLASSIC..."Hero's Journey."

LovelyBluePill
The Hero's Journey is about choice, courage AND A MIRACLE
...Just as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars we could process
this sudden loss with BOTH prayer AND the "template"
of "The Hero's Journey." I recall the famous Philosopher Joseph
Campbell addressing the value of embracing the Hero's Journey as
we faced the obstacles in our own lives. The series called
"The Hero's Journey" on PBS was excellent and I completely
had forgotten how it helped me years ago.

One of the things that we hear repeated in films dealing
with sudden disaster and loss is summed up as:
"It was terrible...but...It was really the best thing that
happened to me." (You can't really grasp this idea unless
you have actually experienced some level of personal
loss or disaster.) It seems impossible that we could
find a perspective about SUDDEN tragedy in our life to move
it from the position of being "the worst thing" that ever happened...to the BEST thing?

THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ME?

Author of "The Power of Now," Eckhart Tolle has even
mentioned in a few of his presentations...that these
experiences with SUDDEN disaster can turn out to be
"the best thing that ever happened." When I heard this
the first time, I almost turned off the video. But...
now I am beginning to "get" what he is saying.

Posting this on Post #2--reply to Harriet--as it
brings up the "poster child" for The Hero's Journey,
AA's founder Bill Wilson.

This is the video outlining the 12 steps of the
"Hero's Journey" (by Joseph Campbell.)

[link to youtu.be (secure)]
FairUSE

Quote:
Here is a list of the "Process" for the Hero's Journey:
Note:
Luke Skywalker (Star Wars), Indiana Jones (Raiders of
the Lost Ark), "larger than life people" (Bill Wilson,
Founder of AA) (Even Jesus in the Christ Story) are
actually intended as "templates" for our own personal
hero's journey. We can "answer the CALL" or we can choose
to "refuse the call" which are both steps in the journey.
In the end UDECIDE.

The Process:

1. The "ordinary world" (where we all begin)

2. The CALL

3. Refusal of the CALL

4. Meeting the Mentor

5. Crossing the Threshold Ordinary World
---------------------------------------------------------------
Special World

6. Test, allies, enemies

7. Approach

8. Ordeal, Death (of Ego) Rebirth

9. Reward, Seizing the SWORD Special World
---------------------------------------------------------------
Ordinary World

10. The Road Back

11. Ressurection

12. RETURN (with the "Elixer")

Thanks for the timely reminder. Hope I have a chance to view this tonight.

Merry Christmas, Oracle's Cookie! and to all reading this post.

I'm having to watch "The Hero's Journey" a few times
to process it fully. It really is a profound perspective
and could be incredibly valuable if you are "anchored"
(and some people really are...) in the "victim" mentality
for the unfortunate events in your life.

What I found especially interesting in the video was
the author's point that even though we go through the
"Hero's Journey"--coming out of the experience with the
"elixer" we need to take back into our ordinary lives
--we may actually eventually "lose that original enlightenment"
and need to REPEAT the SAME Hero's Journey again until
we finally can "get it."

Watched the documentary on Alcoholics Anonymous Founder,
Bill Wilson last night on PBS. If there would be a good
example of someone going through the HUGE challenges of
the Hero's Journey....but then "losing it" and needing
to "repeat the process" to gain the insights again,
Bill Wilson would be a POSTER CHILD for this example.

2 minute duration. Bill Wilson, Founder of AA
reports the original "spiritual awakening" he had
received early in his sobriety. While this lofty
spiritual experience would propel Wilson through many
decades and his careful stewardship of the AA Fellowship
later in his life he would lose the vision and sink into
a life-threatening depression. He would--just as the
video explains--need to REPEAT THE HERO'S JOURNEY
until he embraced the miracle once again.

Little known to most AA'ers, Bill Wilson went from the
Hero (for his own experience of alcoholism to recovery
and founding the fellowship of AA) to having the AA
Fellowship during the 50's turning their backs on him!

Wilson decided to take part in the "controlled medical experiments"
into the benefits of LSD--as a possible medical breakthrough for
treating chronic alcoholism for those who did NOT experience the
spiritual enlightenment Wilson was able to have early in his sobriety.
Wilson became nearly suicidal over this NEGATIVE reaction from his
fellowship (as some suggesting he had "relapsed" or become a drug addict)
and--as would be expected in A REPEAT experience (described in Campbell's
"Hero's Journey") he would go through yet another dark night of the soul
with his LSD experience and meeting his late in life mentor Alice-
Wilson would come through the other side a changed being the remainder
of his life.

Interesting "take" on his Bill Wilson's life using the 12 steps
of the Hero's Journey.

Thanks Harriet, I think you will really enjoy the video.

Loss Of A Loved One

Losing a loved one can be stressful and painful.

If they were taken as a result of an illness, at least you realize that they are now in a truly better place, with no pain nor sadness.

But if the person was taken unexpectedly, many folks struggle with the loss, even to the point of being angry with God.

No human can truly know the Good Lord's reasons, but here's some thoughts.

If the person was rebelling against the Lord, maybe they were taken & given one last chance to Believe & ask forgiveness.

Maybe the person was back-sliding in life, and the Lord took the person home before things got worse.

Perhaps the Lord had / has tasks for the person to do that required the person to be in spirit form.

Or maybe the Lord was pleased with the person so much that He brought that person home.

I'm sure there are many other possible reasons.

Pray to the Good Lord that the person was actually Saved.

Give thanks to God for the good times you spent with the person. Those memories will last in your heart.

So, I got a bit of a ramble I guess... not complete by any means. I do intend to lay it down before I sleep tonight though.

Im`a start with an old saying; life is a journey, not a destination. Journey as a hero, what is there to it? There is a hero; a person admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. There is also a journey; going from one place to a other. These are the given definitions. So the obvious conclusion is thatwe are that hero, and this journey is singular, pertaining only to ourselves.
Seems to me, a fallacy.
No hero in popular culture, or mythology, obtains hero status by saving only themselves. That is not a hero. Experiences are not necessarily for us, but of benefit to others (a true hero does not save him/her self, but the innocents).

Thus, we have this misplaced concept that we are heroes on our own personal journey to save ourselves. We continue in circles, starting over again where we began. It is never enough, because we are disillusioned to what the final goal, the ending achievement is. We think we need "X" because that will "end" the journey. Preconcieved notions. We need A to B pathways.

Then, after all that searching, relying only on ourselves ( because, of course, that is our self interest) we still have not obtained the end of our journey. How can we obtain that end while we still breathe?

So, we are left wanting. We have not reached an end, and we begin again. We are human, and while we yet live, there is always that which left to attain.

Hence rises this 'victim' mentality. When we have given all repeatedly, and there is still more which is yet required of us, people panic and shut down. It is far easier to become a ship adrift, rudderless, than to take command of your own course. Damsel in destress if you will. Someone something just happens to, with no control, no refuge nor recourse. Absolutely helpless.

We continue to search, haphazardly, thinking the next achievement secure our finding of the hero within. All true heroes realize however, that in the end, all they might accomplish is really for the benefit of others. How else could it work?

Hence is the conundrum. Victim vs. those percieved as capable of weathering said happenings. Differentiating between someone who feels helpless, and someone who is admired for their ability to overcome the same downfall.

And yet, who are we to know who this happening is really for? Is it for us, the hero, on our own personal quest? The chance to prove ourselves, with this test or that. Or is it for those less mature than ourselves, those of little or no faith?

We may be placed in any given situation, at any time, for the sole purpose of giving another human being the opportunity to step forward. They may never have that chance again. Maybe your victimhood is the one chance they get to be a hero.

Perhaps in the very long run, our heroes journey has less to do with us, and more to do with who we might be helping along in fellowship.

To paraphrase: all things are for His greater glory, and will always be used as such. We are only vessels. Realizing all along we are never given more than we can handle. We start with where we are, and by the grace of God alone, we finish the race.

Aloha, and God Bless, all life is sacred, no matter where we are on the path. We might be victim, or we might be hero. It all can change with the gust of a wind. But, we are! By the everlasting love of our creator, we are!

Hey In Yer Neck! (Loved that nostalgic video of the
old Lawrence Welk shows sign-off music "Good Night")
...wow...did THAT bring back memories of my "Pre-Hero
Journey" when I was just a kid. Hope you had a good rest!

UputMe2Sleep

You have quite a comment here, and I appreciate your
taking the time to post this. I think the summation that
you can't really think that you have finished the "Hero's
Journey" unless--like the Video explaining the 12 steps
of the Journey--you bring back to the normal world the
"Elixer" that allows you to deeply care about others
and to "save the innocents" (like In Yer Neck suggests.)

Thanks for your post!
cheers

Yes, the weather is very strange all over the world.
We have been going up and down the thermometer up here
in NW Montana and we're anticipating a big snow storm for
Christmas.

Sorry the cold is uncomfortable for you in SD. I'm glad
you have a little shed and a honey to keep you warm.

By the way, Up here in NW Montana...we are expecting our
first super bad blizzard Thursday night into Friday. I
would trade your 50 degrees in a heartbeat! lol!

verycold

Thanks for your insights.

cheers

It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death. This is truly creating crimes in order to punish them.

Hey Cookie,

You were talking about the 9/23 signs in another thread and I found something to add to that touches the Hero’s Journey as well.

Music has always been the most powerful part of my personal prayer experience and for whatever reason I have been really drawn to The Killers lately.

When is the last time anyone watched Mr. Brightside? That video blows my mind, you should watch it right now. It came out 13 years ago and is symbolically exposing the elite’s prostitution and satanism. The girl is very reminiscent of the Divine Sophia who is abused by the Devil. It’s some potent imagery, love the Foo dogs, and led me to wonder where they were getting it from, possible cabal band.

Turns out that Brandon Flowers is Christian and just released a new album on, guess the date....9/22!!!

The album is Wonderful Wonderful, full of symbolism and gnostic stuff, especially the last song. Out of all the dates that an album could come out on, considering that the Killers music has been loaded with symbolism for 13 years, it just happens to come out right before the 9/23 alignment, and features explicit Biblical content.

From the Calling

“I walked into town with a message for my old man,
Got the last two chapters of Matthew in my hand.”

“Follow the Sun out of the Night,
Brother just lean into the light.”

You can really see an amazing hero’s journey in how Brandon Flowers was able to go through the dark night of the elite show biz industry and still come out with amazingly profound, inspirational music all these years later.

So yeah, if you are feeling down, listen to this album. It’s [link to youtu.be (secure)]

Thanks Bohemian I will check it out. And...Yes, I do
remember the 9-23-2017 predictions. Extremely interesting
times we are in, for sure!

I think I am going to do much better this Holiday Season
than I have in the past--just the 2 videos I've posted
have helped a great deal. While I really rely on prayer
in my life to "balance" it doesn't hurt to try to help
yourself out of a "funk" and we have the wonderful tool
of the internet to bring us new insights we may never
have had before. The Joseph Campbell material has been
especially helpful, and I have already mentioned Eckhart
Tolle's perspectives which enlarge on Campbell's stuff
really well.

Here is your album, Bohemian.

A Lovely holiday to you and yours! Thanks for the
suggestion about music. I'll definitely remember that.
