Roberts was looking far down the road...10 years...20 years...100 years when he turned the Obamacare individual mandate into a tax.
Justice Roberts personally turned the Obamacare individual mandate into a tax. He did it himself. It was his vision, and many people said he was the only person in America who saw the individual mandate as a tax.
GLP was calling him a traitor back then as were most Republicans, but I saw it as genius for several reasons. The main thing was that repealing the individual mandate would be relatively easy if it was a tax.
Roberts saved the day because the individual mandate is going down probably all because of him.
Brilliance is usually only recognized in retrospect.
You have to look at the big picture to see the genius of Roberts' decision.
He set a precedent that the U.S. government couldn't force people to buy a product.
He set a precedent that the U.S. government couldn't charge people a fine just for being alive.
He turned the Obamacare individual mandate into a tax which made it relatively easy to repeal.
His decision caused problems for a while, but in the big picture it was an important step in controlling tyranny.
